A customer brought this LUXOR PC Speaker System Model SK-808 for repair and the complaint was the audio-out was very low and with distortion.

Of course, first thing I thought was about one or more e-caps with high ESR failure.

The system was disassembled.

When the e-caps were tested on with the Blue ESR Meter, all of them were good. Next step was to clean the volume control (potentiometer) with Castrol spray.

When the Speaker System was tested on again, the system was faulty yet. So the duty was a little harder now. Both the passive as the active components had to be checked on. When the duty was performed, guess what? A transistor was shorted between collector and base, it was an A733P (frequency amplifier PNP epitaxial silicon transistor).

A replacement brought the speaker back to life again and saving it from the dump. PC speaker repair is not that difficult provided if you have the knowledge of testing electronic components.

It's nice to fix things,I do it for a living, but pc speakers? they sound so horrible, it hardly seems worthwhile to spend any effort in repairing them, plus my time is worth so much more than the hour or so it takes to repair a $20 pair of pc speakers.

      Hi Bill,

If it is for commercial purpose then it is not worth to repair. If it is for education purpose and fun/hobby then it is worth to repair it. Money to them is secondary. Thanks Mr. Jestine Yong.

Hi Bill G, I can confess you I really enjoyed mending of this pair of speakers. They owned to a friend of mine, and in my country is very hard to get a new pair of PC Speakers, and if you find them, you have to pay enough because they are expensive.
