PC Speakers No Sound Repaired
I received a PC Speakers from customer with the complaint of no sound. On visual inspection I found the power led was lighted but there was no sound.
So I opened the speaker amplifier unit for further diagnosis. I found some solder sprinkle on one resistor, as you can see there were very few components on this PCB.
So the resistor was removed after cleaning the solder and checked with my multimeter.
It shows 4.7K reading that means resistor was good. Checked power input it shows 10.3V AC that means power section was also good.
After confirmed all the voltages were good, I started to check on every component in the PCB. In this process I found Volume Control POT was open circuit. I had to remove this component to check it off board for accuracy purpose. It was indeed open circuit and the POT value was 50 K ohm.
The reason I said open circuit is because it did not have any Ohm when tested it with my Multimeter. A good one should show tolerance of 50 K OHM. Since my shop does not have this part, I have to go to the nearby electronics shop to get one.
After the replacement and powered On the speaker, the sound came back to life again.

Excellent! Pot failing in Audio System is quite common! But getting exact replacement of its size and type, is always a problem!

POTS like e-caps often are causing problems were replacing the bad ones is the only remedy left. And in audio circuits normally the Logaritmic types are used. In case they only would have sold 100kohm POTS, adding a 100kohm in parallel would have solved that. And if I have to connect an amplifier with an input impedance of 100kohm (line) to the audio output of a computer with the wrong output impedance (for instance 1 kohm output) I just add a high serie resistor to level the to high ouput power of my computer tot the Amplifier input. (and if there also is a dc output current involved I also add a capacitor to prevent blowing up anything). Thanks for the article Yogesh.
