Pinhole In Semiconductor

By on May 13, 2010

Certain semiconductors like diodes, IC’s and Transistors can be tested good but it will fail when under load. Upon careful inspection, sometimes you could see very tiny pinhole at the outer layer of the component. In the future if you suspect that a section have problem and you can’t locate the faulty components, you may have to directly replace the components and retest. You may also have the choice to see the semiconductor with a magnifying glass first before replacing it.

What do you mean by pin holes? And where do you find these?

    Hi Luis,

Pin hole usually found on semiconductor especially ICs after a surge or power related problems in power supply. It is a small dot of burnt tiny hole and you have to use magnifying glass to see it. Not all semiconductors have pin hole problem.

We joke with this hole as how electronics work on smoke, when the smoke comes out, the circuit stops working.
But seriously, Justine you are correct! I used to as part of my job inspect components and soldering standards of quality for this a microscope was used, there are now these small usb camera scopes that allow you to look closely without problem of component removal.
    All the best
