But seriously, Justine you are correct! I used to as part of my job inspect components and soldering standards of quality for this a microscope was used, there are now these small usb camera scopes that allow you to look closely without problem of component removal.

Pin hole usually found on semiconductor especially ICs after a surge or power related problems in power supply. It is a small dot of burnt tiny hole and you have to use magnifying glass to see it. Not all semiconductors have pin hole problem.
