Great Ingenuity! I have been battling the same issue on my own tape deck. Also trying to find belts is not easy these days. Do you have a good source for belts?
It is the simple solutions that are sometimes the most illusive!

I have done this in a few cases in the past. As the load is shared by the two belts, it lasts longer and even if one breaks, it just slides down without getting wound on any wheels. This is my experience. Well, one cannot rule out the possibility of mechanism getting stuck. That can happen even otherwise. Many thanks for your comments!

Adding two belts together on one motormechanism is new to me! But maybe if now one belt breaks it will still stop the mechanism and the good flat belt too?
