Repaired HDD Which Continuously Going To Auto Recovery Mode In Windows 10 With Blue Dump Error
One of my colleagues of computer repair field sent me the Hard disk for repair which gives continuous errors in blue screen.
I connected the Drive on my setup & on booting it gives following error & PC gets reboot.
(Here it shows “I/O Error” it means HDD is not communicating with the respected Circuit.)
HDD is detecting in Computer BIOS that means SATA channel is OK it indicates HDD is Communicating with the Motherboard but it is unable to read data from inside the disk.
First I confirmed with my colleague about DATA. He told me DATA is not important. I connected this HDD with my working HDD & boot the computer from My HDD as Primary & BAD HDD as secondary. Screen continuous giving error and unable to format the same.
I convey this problem to my colleague & he is also agreed on same symptom because he already tried & getting same problem.
As I/O error in this symptom indicates nos. of possible causes
- Firmware of HDD got corrupt,
- PCB Main I/O IC Problem,
- Motor controller IC problem,
- Head or Media is damaged,
Any of above is not worth to repair …. still I decide to take closer look of the PCB & check if any area on PCB is overheating. but no indication while I am touching on PCB. Now I removed the PCB for visual inspection.
Both Open Copper pad contacts are Oxidized hence it is not getting proper contact with read/ write Head and Motor. Cleaned the contacts using earbud & IPA.
After cleaning the PCB, I connected it back on the HDD. I connected the HDD on My computer & it detected directly.
I formatted the HDD & it is showing it successfully.

After this cleaning you probably didn't need to format the harddisk anymore, and
all previous customer's hdd data was kept intact.

Albert,
HDD is not formatting & some time it gets rebooted while in format process. that is why I checked by giving format command & checked whether the problem is persist. There is no customer Data on the drive which I already confirmed it with my colleague & then I proceeded the work.

I put a little silicone oil on the pads after cleaning to avoid future corrosion.

Anwar Yunas Shiekh,
Thanks! for your feedback, I am not having pure silicon Oil that time but I applied WD40 instead which works as contact cleaner.

Well done Yogesh.
I would not have thought to do this.
Surprised you formatted the HD though.
I assumed you went through this effort in an attempt to actually save the data.
But the experience, and you telling the story, is invaluable!

Some of us may not have suspect problem to be hardware, as I first thought it must be software problem, however I have learnt something from you. Thanks for sharing
