This Radio and its AC Adapter (in a battered condition – with double meaning) was brought to me by a close friend of mine. The story goes that this Radio and the ACA was kept inside a bag along with Dosa Batter inside a tin, by his Dad, who traveled in a long distance Bus. When a sudden break was applied, the bag rolled over, spilling its contents around, and also battered the ACA to pieces. Well, for us it might look funny, but for his age old Dad, it was too much to bear with. The batter had already dried up well when the Radio was brought to me.

I opened the set and look at what I found:

I removed the grill of the speaker, as the batter had entered into the sides. Did a thorough cleaning of each and every part. Cleaned and lubricated the connectors, controls and switches.

The result of the cleaning will be evident from the following: (The ACA was working too!)

Tried after giving power and found the Radio to be still working very well! So, assembled it back. Fixed the broken screw lugs of the ACA properly.

No components replaced! A job well done and qualified to be passed on to the Satisfaction Bag!

Sad that Philips no longer is a core manufacturer of consumer electronics seeing this device was very well repaired without having to replace any of the original parts. I believe it was not the first Philips device that was completely restored to its original working condition again after a big internal leakage. (It was a television set before that was completely wet after a heavy monsoon rain?).

It started out as a storm but it ended turning out to be gentle breeze. It encourages me not to get scared just by seeing things with the first glance. Things usually are simpler than they appear.

Good article Parasuraman! Inspiring like always.

Sure, Ghashaan. Life is simple. The problem is that some people dwell on complicating it.

Good job, Parasuraman. Is that batter like what Americans call pancakes or flapjacks?

Very good, Parasuraman. In spite of your excellent knowledge and skills in electronics were not used in this case.
