Dear Parasurman Great work sir. I have a old Philips valve radio and need to get it repaired. Some one has removed the speaker from it. It was working well. Can you please guide me on this. I am from coimbatore and live in Chennai. Thanks sir

I have already replied to a query by Albert van Bemmelen what TRA stands for. It stands for Telescopic Rod Antenna.

TRA stands for Telescopic Rod Antenna. Yes, you are right, Philips should have given a reverse protection, which is very simple to add. But they recommend usage of their own adaptors only. Yes, it was indeed a time consuming and hard work to put back the dial cord!

Very good, Parasuraman. As a veteran too, I´ve repaired too many old radios years, years ago. Dealt a lot with germanium transistors. The problem you´ve related with tuning cord was always a headache for me. I never liked this part of the maintenance.

I didn't get to understand what TRA is.

Indeed a very difficult repair! I have no idea what a TRA is, and fixing back the cord on the Tuning spindle and the Gang driving wheel must be really hard I'm sure. And getting replacement germanium diodes and transistors will not be easy either. That is probably why you used 1n14148 silicium diodes instead of the OA79 germanium diodes in the RF section of the radio. It is a bad thing that Philips didn't provide an anti-polarity protection diode on the external power input. It would have been a cheap and excellent safety method to prevent blowing up the internal components like it now has.
