Saved EVEREADY LED Bulb And LED BATTEN From Dump

how to fix led bulb

These lights belong to my house and became defective one day to give me the amusement of fixing these!

Case (1) Eveready-H12-20-LED Bulb: This bulb conked off one day and I opened the dome sprinkling IPA on its side and gently prying it open.

The LEDs were all burnt. The driver was in bad shape.

I removed the LEDs using a hot plate and scraped it clean taking it to my Car Garage.

After removing the LEDs, I checked up at random and was surprised to see that the LED was drawing 8.1V!

8.1v led

The reason obviously is that the LED had built up resistance and the LED Checker pumped in 8.1V to get a current reaching at the other end. But this was a unique experience! Anyhow, after studying the array of LEDs, which was 9LEDs in series x two rows, connected in parallel and the voltage output was reading 74 Volts, which on load is expected to adjust to the required voltage because of the current drawn, I fixed 3V LEDs in place.

Then I replaced all the electrolytic and fixed caps on the board, as these were found strained. Retouched the board very well so that there were no dry solders.

Rechecked the output and it was good enough. So soldered the LED Board, put it inside the bulb and fixed the dome and applied power to see a good light emission. Unfortunately, in my excitement I forgot to click the voltage reading and populated LED board! Here you can see the bulb glowing and looking at the defective components expunged!

Case (2) Eveready LED Batten-LBT-4FP: Those of you, who have not read my article on a similar LED Batten, may please do so, as values of some bust components in that could be known in this article:

https://jestineyong.com/capacitor-fumed-in-eveready-led-batten-model-lbt-4fp/

This was yet another case of bulgy tank capacitor. Having experienced in handling such a batten, it was easy for me to flip open the side covers, de-solder the supply wires from the LED strip and gently pull it out. Then the LED Driver was also pulled out, just like how I had described in the previous article. The values of the Fixed and Electrolytic capacitors may please be noted down for future reference:

The value of the electrolytic capacitor was 100uF/80V. I replaced the electrolytic capacitor with a 100uF/160V and fixed it straight like how I did last time. The voltage readings were also same like last time and there is no need for repetition. Then applied power and found the lamp to be working very well like new!

So, fixed the side covers and kept it aside for fitting it in place later.

Double missions accomplished with double satisfaction, which followed one after another to avoid jumping on each other causing injuries, which the bag readjusted and accommodated happily! (What all weird imaginations I get into, eh?) (LOL)

But wives seldom acknowledge and appreciate the value! They dislike the house becoming a mess with scattered sets lying all around, like an earthqauaked city! This is the general opinion from many technicians in my whatsup group! Many thanks for your comments!

Wonderful work, but I suspect the components cost more than a new bulb.

sir, i want to ask if in radio the fm/am ic vcc is measuring very low input voltage: instead of 3-12V, it show 0.36V, can i assume its faulty or what can i do.Thanks.

Something is shorting in the load. Look for any shorting active components or leaky passive components like capacitors. If nothing is found, replace the IC, if power supply is good enough.

Remove the IC & check Voltage on IC VCC Pin pad on the PCB if voltage is OK...Replace the IC.

    Well done Maestro!
Many of these bulbs make it impossible to repair bcos they are sealed in insulation. It also never occurred to me to check the voltage drop across individual LEDs in bulbs. Learned a new trick today!
