This ASUS PC was brought to me and the complaint was the Windows OS was not loading anyway.

Ah! I forgot saying this OS (Operating System) had been re-installed recently.

When the lateral cover was taken out (only two screws) and a visual inspection was done, it was decided to extract the HDD; it was a SEAGATE Barracuda of 80 GBytes.

In this case the circuitry was taken out.

Let’s have a look at the PCB of this HDD with the photos below.

But now let’s have a closer look of the electronics.

As you can see in the photos above there were great deals of dirty and cold solder joints, very critical in my own opinion. All of them were restored with fresh tin. In addition the golden contacts were cleaned with a pencil eraser too.

Did you stare at my pencil eraser? It’s wasted a lot, due to the use. The HDD was armed and attached into the slot of the PC.

Now the PC was turned on and look at the results.

As you can see the OS really loaded perfectly. But the PC was turned off and restarted many times to make some probes, and the result was always  satisfactory.

Mission accomplished: another HDD saved from the junk.

Note: the most important thing saved in this device was the valuable information stored in the partition named as D.

Hi Humberto, good job. The Manufacturers of the Rubber Pencil Erasers must have made their Gums more costly after seeing this again. (just joking!). Also my friend Charl, who is a very good watchmaker, uses this method to for instance clean the connector strips on bad conducting lcd panels or on other parts. Mostly on wet, dirty, oxidized LCD watches. All normal 16 x 2 char LCD panels can be disassembled too and the glas LCD is conducting with the pcb underneath via rubber or silicone connector strips with conducting black carbon in it. Just as they are mounted in lcd watches. But I sadly do not know what kind of Gum he uses.

      Hi Albert,

The best eraser for this purpose used to be the ones we had in the old time for erasing ink on drawing paper. They were harder than the current erasers and dark grey color. Unfortunately very difficult to find these days.

      Cheers,
      GM

Thanks Gerald. If I speak with my Friend and Watchmaker again in the near future I will ask him if he knows what Gums are best for the job.
        Cheers.

    Well done Humberto!
Do you know what is the reason why the hard was corroded and with bad contacts?
Is there something in the air where that PC operates?
I had problems with soldering points when I put cctv systems in cowsheds. The evaporating ammonia eat up the soldering points with the copper wiring together and I had lot of broken power wiring in the system. This phenomenon appear after 3-4 month after the system was installed and the soldering was made.
I have to say does the soldering point was properly but maybe not good enough isolated.
Could it happen in your case does this hard will corrode again?

      Chris,
I am using silicon non conductive paste on solder joint and on Connectors.effective way to prevent Oxidation corrosion on copper joints.

Well Chris, in my country the enviroment moisture is very high, over 100% some days, that's a reason of corroded contacts. Another reason is that PCs work at closed rooms and the cigarette smoke is very harmful for electronic circuits.
