Thanks for your comment Albert,
I am always keen to try new repairs - not all are successful, but I learned a lot from this one.
The guy that tried to repair the laser power pack was a mechanic with 'years of electronic experience', as he said, but I guess the proof is in the repair or lack of repair.
I enjoy these sort of repairs because you have to see what others have tried to do and work backwards to the original problem before you have a positive result

Fixing other stupid engineer's faults never makes it any easier. Hopefully the customer working in the automotive branche business will be able to at least replace the battery packs without destroying the laser unit again. For cleaning flux residue I mostly use turpentine also called white spirit or thinner that mostly works better than isopropyl alcohol.
I heard about exploding lasers after batteries were connected polarized wrong in laser pens. I never tested that though. But we never can be too careful!
