how to fix battery charger

These two battery chargers were brought to my shop for repair. The customer explained that these two exploded on site as an electrician was working on the restaurant electrical system.

It is very obvious what exploded in these chargers but you think this is bad? Take a look on the other one.

For some reason this device took more damage but do not let the black burnt marks fool you in such situations.

First clean the components, find out what is bad and what is fine then do the repair

The two devices experience the same thing so if I repair the first one, the other one should be repaired as well. So let the repair begins.

burnt varistor

This is the varistor that exploded on both devices and that was the only wrong thing with both of them.

varistor replacement

I did a lot of cleaning on both devices, fresh solder and added new varistor; different color but same specs for both of these battery chargers.

These are images from the other battery charger and it was nasty. (After cleaning).

On this one the varistor exploded and melted the capacitor nearby but the capacitor was still functional.

I replaced it any way along with a new working varistor.

I powered one of them through a current limiter and the device came on but the light was flashing. I called the customer and I told him about that and he said that is normal because it does not have a load connected to it.

So both battery chargers were up and running and I called the customer for pick and he was extremely happy with the outcome because as I understood from him these are expensive and cannot be found locally.

Mission Accomplished.

What on earth did the electrician do to exceed 230V?

I also would ask the same question because these instances apparently seem to happen very frequently in your country according to your previous repairs?

Albert: yes it does. I got this kind of faults a lot because of mistakes done with electricians but do not bother to aske what happened. have a blessed day

Jim: I never tried that but I do not like to use oil for clean up electronic parts. I usually use that for rusty stuff. have a blessed day
