It doesn't actually cause the drawer to move but gives feedback to the controller to tell the circuit that the drawer is fully open or closed, and to stop driving it.

That said, when it fails, it will cause problems, as the control system won't know whether the drawer is closed and needs to open, or is open and needs to close. In this situation, it will simply stop working (as you found!)

The tray wouldn't open, I scratched my head a lot around it but it wasn't a bad component, but more a mechanical issue, altough it looked still well lubricated, I greased it and started working. The tray and loading mechanism is the same as yours, even though mine is a very cheap model. I guess in the end there are very few transport mechanisms and that they are each used by a wide variety of manufacturers. Still, it would have been helpful if I had your article at hand before attempting to repair mine... 🙂

Good article, clear explanation and nice photos. I have the faintest idea what the control assembly that you ask about is all about. Knowing deeply about DVD starts with understanding well the full meaning of DVD and the DVD disc design features, now add to it DVD player complicated operation. There is far much more to it than I thought. I abandoned the hectic exploration mission and so did myself a favour of saving my head from explosion. On a lucky day I heavily relied on human senses and common sense to repair a DVD player. For instance, DVDs run faster than VCDs. so whenever a DVD rotates abnormaly slow and so hindering expected playing, I would tackle the disc-running motor circuit or the motor itself. And if the lens wasnt working, checking its flex cable condition and lens cleaning is what I would do. Of cause I also did the normal SMPS repairs that prevent proper DVD player functionality. SIDE-ISSUE; I THINK I LIKE THE MOVIE IN IT.
