sony hbd-tz210 home theater system repair

Customer sent to me this Sony HBD-TZ210 home theater system with the complaint of “push power protect”.

In fact this kind of problem is very common in home theater system and mini hi-fi. You can read my previous article about push power protect in Sony Mini-Hi-fi in the below link:

https://www.jestineyong.com/sony-mini-hifi-push-power-protect-problem-solved/

Push Power Protect HBD-TZ210 Repair

Once the cover was removed I could see the power supply board, main board and the main amplifier section-see the photos below:

I focused on the sound and pre-amplifier board and resoldered all the ICs but the problem remained the same.

The next step was to remove all the three sound ICs to isolate the problem. The sound IC part number was CXD 9965 TN and available from the local market.

After removal of the sound ICs, I then powered it up to check if the error message (push power) still display or not. I was happy to see that no error message appeared and the player starts to read DVD disk. In fact this is one of the great ideas to solve the push power problem.

I concluded that one or may be more than one of the sound ICs were having problem causing the push power protect problem. Replacement with the 3 new sound ICs solved the problem. The photo below is showing that everything was working fine.

A great job Suranga as always! The CXD9965TN chips only cost $6.00 a piece so replacing the old ones was not a question of costs.
However I wonder if you were not able to disable the 3 chips separately by just cutting the Vcc lines or Enable signals going to any of them?

Maybe only one of these was bad and that would save a lot of time and soldering work.
I tried to find a datasheet of this chip to find its powerlines but I couldn't find any data. Which states that it was easier to buy one then to study them.

      Hey Albert

I agree with you. At least this is what I would try to do. To locate the defective one. And this because I believe, although there is no proof, that only one of them was defective...As with car batteries...Always one cell fails rendering the entire battery useless...On the other hand, apart from those (2x6)$ thrown in the garbage bin, the PCB suffered two unnecessary "surgeries" and this is what I always try by any means to avoid...
Anyway, as regards the time parameter, Suranga's method is the right one.

      Greetings

Indeed Paris, Time is always a Factor. But I was thinking like maybe the bad chip didn't get hot. And in that case knowing this also could save Time and Money. Or vice versa maybe only the bad Chip got hot?
Which would be of great help if the same kind of device would pop in for another repair like this one any next time. I am just thinking out loud.

        Thanks for your reply!

          Hi Albert

That’s why in the past, when running my own repairs business, I used in such cases to detect the current in the return path of the power supply in order to locate the culprit.
Well, I have the relevant article ready long ago in order to be sent for publishing in this blog but I lost the necessary test jig I had made and used at that time.
Worse than that, I cannot find its schematic diagram in order to rebuild it again.
And my memory fails to “retrieve relevant data from hard drive”. I don’t remember the circuit…
Although I have tried some simple designs of my own, they failed. All of them had during the tests a tendency to oscillate. You see the amplification factor is had was very high, around 10000.
The tests method was based on Ohms Law again. I was measuring with the jig microvolts across a few centimeters of the PCB foil tracks and by amplifying these micro-voltages into the volts range it was possible to use an ordinary (cheap) multimeter in order to locate the shorted component. These amplified volts were the picture of the running current through the track. This is an absolutely fail-safe method in order to resolve enigmas like these cases.
As soon as I succeed with a new jig I will send the article to Jestine.

          Best Regards

Understood Paris. I know what you mean about finding the
lowest shorting resistance on a pcb board. I had examples on
Laptop mainboards with about a dozen parallel switched
Capacitors of which only one Capacitor was the cause of the
problem why the pc system wouldn't start. I used to connect
a low Voltage on the Board with a highest Amperage available
that caused the, as a low resistor acting, short circuiting
Capacitor to become hot or even go up in smoke! Saving the time
having to check every Capacitor on the Mainboard. But now I use
also some of the very low Digital Resistance Meters available.
But checking the low Ohmic values still is tricky knowing todays Microprocessors only need about 0.9Volts or less at those very
high Currents. I am looking forward to your article describing
that jig you mentioned. I hope you'll be able to recuperate the
old Data. It could be a better more promising way to use in
cases all other methods fail? Thanks!

            Hi guys,
I wonder if that is what the "Leak Seeker" does to find shorts?
I am also waiting for that article! It will be very interesting.

I tried to see how a "Leak Seeker" exactly works Robert. But I
haven't found any Operating Guide of such a device yet. But I
noticed that the Seeker model 82 was no longer sold or produced.
It has no "jig" obviously since there are only a Ground crocodile
clip and a red Testpen attached to the Device.

Good work Suranga. In Malawi it is not easy to find those ic. We just remove the culprit and let the remaining ones continue their work.

Another great repair to save unit from adding to the E-Waste stream. On a different note I sure would like to have a way system added to this blog that requires people to have to explain why they "dislike" the article before they can post a "dislike" mark. Either we have a "Troll" here or someone must think that they are of a higher order of intelligence than the article author.

      Hi Kevin,

Thanks for the feedback but sad to say there is no such function for it. If you look at Youtube videos, even the videos with super good repair info, there are still dislike. Even a nice movie and nice songs there are still dislike.
