dvd player repair

This Philips DVD Player came in with the complaint of no power. This DVD player was supposed to be not worth to repair because it was sent to other repairer before and he could not repair it. Usually, when an equipment that had been sent to other people to fix and they can’t fix it, there are chances you can’t repair possibly due to missing components (they took out the parts), installed the component the other way round, broke the circuit track, board messy due to no cleaning and etc.

In the photo  below, you could see that the screw were not tightened.

dvd player repair and fix

Once I have tightened the screw and powered on, there was no output voltage from the power supply (the main fuse did not blow). You need to take note that a bad mainboard also can cause no display symptom in the  front panel LCD in which you thought was no power due to  faulty power supply.

no power in dvd player

I flipped the power supply board and saw the previous repairer soldered a 472 2 Kv capacitor at the back of the  board.

It suppose to be soldered on top (front side) and not behind the board. Look at the two photos below:

When I checked on the 472 2 kv capacitor I found it to be defected. I proceed to check on the components in the power primary side and found two more bad filter capacitors (470uf 250Volt)

With the replacement of 3 bad components, the DVD player came back to life again.

Conclusion- If the power supply board have burnt IC and FET (can’t see the part number) and have not been repaired by anyone before then I will use Jestine Yong’s power supply modification ebook information to solve the problem. Ok see you again in the next article.

It always a good thing to examine the reason why a device is not working for ourself, no matter what a previous repair engineer or a customer said. They always can be wrong and possibly made a mistake we have to confirm before scrapping a pefectly good fixable device. So another pro job as always!

    Well done Suranga,
Sometimes the hardest ones to repair are where someone else has had a try at repairing it first.
