21 inch Hotpoint Television with a single horizontal line repaired.
This television belonged to a colleague of mine; he spoke to me several months ago about his TV which was having some white lines across the top part of the screen. I told him the TV need checking but he ignored me, I even forgot about the TV until he came to me one morning wanting to see me urgently. This time the story about his TV has changed and he told me that the TV he talked about has developed a new problem which he thought needed urgent attention.
After inquiring about the problem he told me that it has single line across the screen. I passed by his place with my usual minimum kit, small digital meter and a screw driver. I powered the TV on and for sure the symptom he gave was confirmed, I opened the set and went straight to the vertical circuit.
I did some scanning around the components there but got no physical sign of stressed component. So I took the board with me to my work shop for further testing, on my workbench I pulled my ESR meter because I was suspecting a faulty capacitor. This is because his first complaint was white lines across the top of the screen which is usually caused by capacitor failure. Within two minute I was able to pick capacitor C451 (100uF/35V) which had its ESR gone to the roof.
A normal capacitor of this value should have an ESR reading of less than 1 ohm on ESR meter but it was now reading 34 ohms. As you can see the capacitor looks very innocent and that is why I always request new technicians to invest on an ESR meter. I salvaged another capacitor from a junk board and installed it.
After getting this capacitor I was very happy and I didn’t continue trouble shooting, the following day I was back to his place with the board, after installing the board and powering up with my eyes fixed on the screen I was a disappointed man..No change.
Very fast I concluded that since this capacitor is very critical to this I.C then most probably its faulty lead to the destruction of the vertical I.C.
So I replaced this I.C and I was now very sure that I had solved that problem once and for all. I applied power to the TV and again looking at the screen still the problem was not solved. This is when I decided to get more serious with this repair and to start with I decided to go to that circuit (vertical) and solder out one leg of each component and test them one by one. I started with resistors and I got a resistor which read open to my meter but looking at the colour marking did not make sense to me. The resistor had a reference R461A
I tried to look for a circuit diagram which is close to this TV model and I bumped on this China TV circuit diagram.
To my surprise this resistor actually act as fuse for the vertical circuit and once it opened means the supply to the vertical circuit was cut off hence the horizontal line on the screen. This also made me to conclude that the I.C could have actually shorted and that is what caused this fusible resistor to open.
After replacing that resistor I went back to the owner and reinstalled the board still not sure if I got everything right this time and after applying the power this is what I saw.
Lesson learnt is that it is not good practice to take any repair assignment as yet another easy task. I believe if I did voltage testing around that circuit I could have picked this resistor on my first attempt. Anyway I learnt my lesson and the customer was happy to see his TV come back to life.

Hi Mrotieno,
Have you checked the vertical yoke is shorted or not, to do this test you will need a flyback tester..you cannot use a meter here.

Good day to you I myself take out circuit board to the work shop for repairs but hook up a yoke and use an oscilloscope to check waveforms at the vertical and video circuits,the last generation of crt do not display a horizontal line any more but shut down after a few seconds and this requires a different an interesting level of troubleshooting .

Hi Humphrey! i got a sansui plasma sv-epd-4230bp.the plasma tv has no picture but sound.Ive also seen there is led on the main board,the positions of the leds is D57,D58,D59 and D45.LED D57 and D58 when switching on the tv remains red and D45 goes on and off with 10seconds intervals.D59 remained green the whole time. what is the functions of the LEDs on the main board? thank you in advance!

Too much trouble for a single fuse-resistor, eh?!! Well, it happens all the time...And the secret is hidden within your "lessons learned". Every one of us (involved with electronic repairs) should always keep this in mind.
According to my experience, I believe that more than 95% of the failure cases reveal themselves by performing simple voltage tests, before even removing any suspects from the p.c.b. The real "tough dogs" are rare cases, but, funny though true, most of them have always simple if not obvious causes wchich we miss during toubleshooting, maybe because we consider some things as given, which of course is not the case...
So, nothing is given and correct troubleshooting methodology is what is needed during attempting to bring back in life a dead apparatus...
And, as I said before, I find that tme most important conclusion of this article of yours, is the tutorial one, especially for "newcomers" in the field of electronics' repairs...
I am a senior electronics' technician, not professionally active any more, but I spent all my active time with electronics' repairs working in servicing departments of representatives of major japanese consumer electronics here in Athens-Greece.

And i found one more parts resistor burnt, i can't read its value since its burnt and color changed black..

the parts were found near the FLYBACK
plz help me instruct me how can i fix the problem, when i push the power button on only hear some clicking sounds..

The clicking sound means there is a problem with horizontal output transistor you'd better check it.
And for the diode the answer is NO .it is not safe to try 4007
try 1N5822 or similar instead
if you give more detail you'll sure get better answers .

Hi Mahin, you can replace this diode with any FR Diode like FR105, most diodes on the secondary side of s.m.p.s are fast recovery diode so you can try one.
Regarding the burnt component around the fly-back, check out if burnt component is along the ABL pin of the FBT,if that is the case then consider the FBT gone.

Good job Humphrey. Thanks for sharing your repair with us. Sometimes I will just test components instead of doing voltage testing because I have the time and just want to. But voltage testing is the fastest and best way of troubleshooting faults.

Dan, i hear you, usually resistors are used as fuse and usually have a value of less than one ohm, also in some circuit board they are labeled (FR=fusible Resistor)

In such a case the first thing to do is chech for voltage reading at the legs of the IC and then check the rest. As you said learning the hard way but you have completed the repair mission. Congrats

I have come across such fault of a China TV after checking voltage to the vertical i.c, yoke and as well the vertical i.c also, caps around the secondary power and vertical section, all being in good state but still the horizontal line was still there.
After doing some more trouble shooting I decided to replace the function i.c(la76810a) the fault was no more and the TV was working fine.
The lesson drawn and the best possible way of isolating this horizontal line or vertical fault is firstly, power on the TV.
Watch closely the kind of line displayed on the screen(there are 2 types of lines displayed, one that touches both ends of the screen and the one that doesn't).
In conclusion, we have to note, the one that touches has to do with the voltage not getting across the vertical i.c or a faulty vertical i.c.
And to the one that doesn't has to do with the faulty function or frame I.c(la76810a).

well hello...im from malaysia with 21' panasonic crt tv and i got the same problem too...
but before my crt tv pic going to single line, my tv picture become shaking first, but the piture going to normal after i slow down the brightness..i have done to replace vertical ic, change the false capacitor and check all the defect component..but if i turn up the brightness the problem still haunting me..it can be the flyback problem?? somebody please help me..tq to all

Have you checked if there is any dry joints in the vertical ic and the flyback area? Have you checked if the dc supply to the vertical ic good and stable?

Hi Humphrey I have the same model 21 inch hot point tbmv the problem started when it displayed some Chinese reading on the screen when u switch off it disappears then reappear after sometime it started switching on off alone then lost sound what could be the problem
