Actually it should be the inverter and not converter. If one of the backlight have problem the monitor also could shutdown. Check for bad filter cap at the secondary side too.

Checking a signal transistor have similarity with power transistor except that if the power transistor have built in diode then the reading is totally different from checking a signal transistor. On how to check a power transistor, i have documented it into my ebook Testing Electronic Components.
