I think You could get good entry level Hot air rework station with temp.& Air control in your budget.

Innovative technical skill... I like that.

But the truth be told it was very much a 'seat of the pants' procedure;
one is supposed to follow are careful heating and cooling curve, but not
me! I just kept at it till things seemed about as hot as was reasonable (the magic smoke was threatening to escape).

But I thank you for your diplomacy.

Good job. I also use a heat gun for similar tasks, the one from my hot air solder gun, in combination with a special bought hot air gun holder frame. I also can regulate the airflow and the temperature this way. It keeps my hands free while hot fixing. And protects me from dangerous hot air when I am doing other tasks at the same time:
