I have worked on such phones countless times and your experience just goes to show that the after repairs problems aren't mysterious but evident. Most such successfully repaired devices don't last that long therefore I completely agree with you. Yes the best thing to do is backup content as you did and recommend a replacement ASAP.

Hmmm vacuum chamber...
I'm a bit afraid about the LCD. That is filled with liquid crystal in vacuum and sealed after but how could a vacuum chamber affect the LCD I'm really curious.
If you would apply a small vacuum maybe that would evap the water, but what will happen with the sea salt? (if the device was spilled with sea water).

I think, I would never ask or give a guarantee for that kind of repair, where water was intruded into the device...

The battery usually causes the most damage, or so I have read. I have never worked on a water damaged phone before. I am pretty sure that I remember people washing boards with soap and water. You just would not want to apply power to the board while it is wet.
