Zener Diode Color Coding

If you look at the photo, you will see a diode (D835) have two color stripes across it-Green and Blue color. Since the label is D (D835) so you may think it is a normal diode but actually it is a zener diode. Some manufacturers when putting the label do not follow the standard coding and this will give a problem to repairer. As a repairer you must be flexible otherwise you may have thought that this is a normal diode.  From the schematic, the part number was MA2560 and further check from the datasheet website-it was proven to be a 56 volt zener diode.     Hi,

    At current moment i have only see it in the zener diode. For other diode they would use numbering.

    Sir nice info got one question what if we dont have any schematic on this diode then it very hard to get the datasheet is it ok to replace any kind of zener diode how will I know?

    HI Reynolds,

    If no schematic diagram then it will be hard to locate the exact voltage. You have to try it out on certain zener diode voltages.

      Sorry I do not have such info. Most probably the color code/strip could only be understood by the manufacturer only.

      It will be tough to find out the info from the manufacturers. They have standard code for resistors but no standard code for SMD components.

      I used those small current from the analogue meter. I have Huntron tracker 2000 but I did not use it to test zener diode. What brand of curve tracer you are using?

    I have a zener diode with no part number markings on the schematic only Red Yellow and Green stripes. How do I find the value/voltage of this diode. I've researched this for days with no luck.

      Hi Aga,

      Check what is the voltage around that circuit. Red yellow can be 2.4 volt or 24 volt with 5% tolerance.

      Did the component have the marking of ZD? From which section you found this component? Have you checked if other circuit in the same board have this component with yellow band?

        Yes Sir the component has ZD mark. Its coupled to a relay in the primary section of the circuit board.

    i have a diode with 2 color band. green and yellow..green is near to end which means its cathode i guess..thats it..no more sign or symbol or letter..just 2 color band ... how can i find its voltage or part number?

      Hi Amir,

      Green could be 5 % tolerance. The problem with the zener diode is that there was no standard reference by the manufacturers and left many repair techs in the dark. It could also be 4.5 volt, 45 volt, 5.4 volt or 54 volt but it all depends on the circuit it self. If the surrounding circuit is using low voltage then possible 4.5 or 5.4 volt zener diode and you have to test it out.

    Panasonic is a only company. Which fliped components marking. Like resistor with no color code and zener diode with color code. Like i have one
    Panasonic matsushita resistor R22F 1W
    i can't find it all over internet with same code. and i have same zener diode which showed in this post. i damaged it
    wrongly when checking with multimeter.
    but its acting good i checked it with diode range. not checked in on condition.i tryed to search as name showed in this post. but no luck tryed on finding on aliexpress.tryed on alibaba but no luck.

    i realize this article has been posted here for over a decade but maybe i can glean some insight from anyone a little more knowledgeable than myself on this subject...

    i am scavenging parts from an old early 1980's CB radio board. unfortunately i dont have the make or model of the radio, but maybe that info will help someone estimate what type of diode it is im looking at. it is a through-hole orange glass-bodied diode that appears to be a typical silicon variety switching diode, except that instead of a black stripe, it has two light blue stripes that trace around it except for where this is a blue uppercase "H". from this article it would appear that it is a zener diode, and if the color coding is that mentioned here, im assuming it is then a 66 volt zener diode. does this sound like it might be accurate? the CB radio PCB it is from surely didnt require anywhere near that high a voltage, it had the ability to run off of a 9 volt battery.

    anyway, any help is greatly appreciated, so thank you.
