1 Farad 5.5 Volt BackUp Capacitor

By on August 14, 2008

1 farad

I got an interesting question from an email that i received today. Here is the email:

“I am having problem measuring 1F capacitor 5.5V using the normal meter that is used to measure capacitor. Do you have any method to measure capacitor that huge?”

Since my digital capacitance meter only can go max into testing milifarad and not Farad, is there any of the readers of this blog could provide any information on how to test this super capacitor of 1 Farad besides using the sencore LC103 REZOLVER test equipment that can test capacitor up to 20 FARAD? Appreciate if you could give your comment below-thanks in advance!

If you want to check on the sencore meter you may click on the picture.

    How about voltage testing? I think there is formula after doing the voltage test and give you apprxomate value of cap.

    Basically a Capacitor measurement is something that charges it, then discharges it via a known R resistor and measures time it lasts before voltage goes to 0.

    You can do it with almost any micro controller with ADC!

    you have to conect two capacitors two 1F in capacity in series then you must measure the two capacitor
    notice 1/Ceq=1/c1+1/c2
    1/Ceq =1+1=2
    Ceq = 1/2 F
    by adding more than one capacitors you will reduse the total capacity to reach the upper limit to your meter
    best regards
