A Bluetooth Speaker With Missing 4 Pins USB Port Repaired
A lot of speakers were coming to my shop for repair. The strange thing is a lot of these speakers powers on fine but the USB ports are missing for some reason.
As seen in the photo that is a 4 pins USB port broken off the board inside this speaker and the customer wants me to replace it with a new one as soon as possible.
It is the Christmas season and every place you pass by on the streets in my home town is playing Christmas songs to promote gifts selling.
It is a cool music box and I guess it is worth saving according to the customer. I believe I have the same 4 pins USB port in the shop and should be an easy task to do in a short time.
The ripped USB port was rattling inside the music box and I saw a ripped pad still sticking on the old port.
I could see these ink markings on the sockets of these cables.
It seems like someone took it apart and tried to fix it.
If you look where the arrow is, that is the ripped pad that needs fixing as well. I scratched the trace heading to that pad and added fresh solder there with flux and I was ready to put the USB port on. I took the USB port off a donor board that I have in the shop and it was a perfect fit.
It was soldered on with the help of flux and as always shinny solder brings joy to my face.
I had some Christmas music on a flash drive. I connected to this USB port and the music was loud and clear.
Mission Accomplished.

Well done Waleed.
I had a similar repair where I installed a flush mount dash mount USB Female Cable bcos I was afraid that the replacement would not hold up to future prolonged use. I widened the original slot where the original USB went, cut the male end and soldered the wires to its respective spots on the PBC. But that's bcos I happened to have a flush mount cable laying around so it worked out very well.

Hey Waleed,
Nothing worse than trying to repair a job after someone else has massacred it before you.
Well done on the repair

I found out that replacing or placing 4 or 5 pin usb or micro usb ports is easy when you just put some solder on the copper tracks and add the chassis plug into the solder by just using our hot-air solder station. And by letting the solder carefully cool down without moving the connector in the meantime. That also works when adding or replacing HDMi chassis ports in the same way but is obviously harder because of the many more pins they carry.

albert: yes. that is the way it should be done but it is easy say than done. it is a lot of details to pay attention to especailly when it comes to hot air station, tempreture and air flow, it make a difference. have a blessed day

Good fix! Waleed,
for USB connector sturdiness holding on the PCB- Through hole pins are best option i do not know how many money saving by manufacturer on this onboard design.... where this port is used very often and easily gets damage.
