sharp led tv repair

This LED TV was brought by a customer with the complaint that the screen became dark while watching the TV, though the sound was there. It was a clear case of back light failure and I thought that it was a simple job, which proved to be utterly wrong, explained why, later in the article. I opened the TV and subjected it to a thorough cleaning. Removed the LED wire connection and checked for output. The output was nil. Parallel discussions with my techie friends revealed the facts that handling sharp LED TV is not that easy as it has a lot of protection features built in. If LED back light error is internally verified and registered, the set will never get on and it will just start blinking, making the technician blink probably synchronized with it!

This is exactly what happed to me too! In the process of repeated on/off without the back light problem fixed, it jumped into the error. Though the guidelines such as switch off, wait for a few hours and switch on; keep power button pressed and switch on, wait for a few seconds and release etc. did not work at all! The only way was to get software and load it. So, first I went ahead and dismantled the TV to remove the backlight to fetch replacement. Fixed the replacement, tested and found it ok.

checking led tv backlights

Eye brows might get raised as to why I went for replacement of the backlights without even checking the Driver section and finding the fault. The answer is “due to experts’ advice”; Sharp LED driver will not start working if it does not get the correct load and senses its current drawn cross verified as programmed. So, the first step is blindly replacing the backlight with fresh ones.

Then I looked into the driver section, combed the area for any defective components, tried my best to get a schematic of the Power Supply Board; but nothing brought any result. Hours and days passed. In the meantime I got the software from my techie friends and I removed the SMD program IC and loaded it using the programmer I have:

Fixed the SMD IC and switched on, upon which the blinking error disappeared and I was able to check whether the LED driver output was coming. It was not. Looked like the current over drawn by the old LEDs blew up the driver section. Without the IC data or schematic I had no other go but to fix an external LED driver, which I had. I used a 3.3V regulator and fixed it for Power On to enable automatic backlight on when the power is applied:

Then applied power and found the TV to be working very well.

Allowed it to run for several hours for couple of days and delivered it to customer after ensuring that it worked without any flaw.

Mission accomplished, lessons learnt and satisfaction got sucked into the bag to draw the curtain on this complicated case!

This repair with a happy end was however for me reason never to buy a Sharp tv with such extreme protection features built in. Why a different added backlight led driver board was needed to fix this absurd protected tv.

Public go by brands. Brand manufacturers involve in making a service so complicated that it should reach them or customer should go for a replacement. Recently I had to exchange a three year old Pressure Cooker for a new one as the gasket was stopped from manufacturing. That is the state of affairs. Luckily our unity and group help us solve all such issues with ease. Many thanks for your comments, dear!

This is a topic that rarely gets talked about in this forum: corrupted firmware!

I have not run into this case (thankfully) but I recently bought a chip reader/programmer to dip my toe into the water. The data on those chips and ICs are said to go get corrupted after 10 years or so and reflashing them is to only option to get the TV working again. That is if you are smart enough to recognize the issue (know where to look or who to ask). Well done Sir!

Yes, dear! Be determined to set right anything sincerely; then ways would open up! That's why Jesus Christ advised: Knock the door, it will open and ask for it, you will get it! (I am quoting this from a Tamil Song that I have heard and not from the Bible, though I have read it fully!)
