My friend and old colleague from a previous temporary job brought me his DVD player that failed ejecting a disc that was still inside. And neither did it play the DVD movie because the display kept showing LOADING without doing anything else. And also the Power button didn’t switch off anymore while only showing LOADING. And a blue light was constantly visible in front of the DVD player.

It was time to open up the device by removing 4 screws on the sides. And another 5 screws on the back of the case.

After the screws were removed the metal top cover was easily taken off and the Power board with 3 bulged e-caps on it was unmistakenly causing problems. Below the labels of this JVC player.

And next photo shows the three 2200uF 10V e-caps on the Power board that no doubt needed new replacement capacitors before they were removed. Again problems caused by those always deteriorating e-caps. The bad caps are marked by red pointing down arrows.

Followed also by a photo of the inside view looking in from above, and a photo of the power board’s solder side.

Following photo shows the DVD writer that is used in this JVC player/recorder.

I also tested this DVD drive on an external Power supply to see if it would eject its disc. So making sure that this player still worked which it did. It is attached by a nicely constructed decent special flat cable to 40 pins IDE adapter cable that connects the DVD Player to the decoder board on the right. And I measured the 5V and 12V DC signals on the Molex DVD power connector. After the new e-caps were soldered in place and after placing everything back the JVC player worked splendidly again! As last photo shows.

The TV shows DOKTER TINUS, a Dutch series that is available on DVD. And is the DVD that was left inside the DVD player as it was brought to me. The TV is the Medion DVB-T receiver that was also repaired and written about in a previous article. It has 3 HDMi inputs, 2 scart inputs (one for a decoder), S-video, PC input, Composite, a DVB-T tuner with in and output. Which makes it an ideal universal TV or monitor for testing purposes. And on top on the JVC player my superb SUPERIOR 4in1 programmable IR remote control is visible. Which I need to control my Medion with because none of my other 7 or 8 programmable IR Remotes were able to control this Medion TV.

And the Superior 4 in 1 shown here is the USB programmable Remote. (look at the small micro USB port on its right side).

I also have another almost identical second 4 in 1 Superior Remote that doesn’t have the USB input port but it can also be programmed with an USB IR programmer from Superior that is also available on eBay. I mention these IR Remotes especially because it knows about 260.000 unique device codes (all downloadable for free!). And when you need one for a device that is not yet supported you can ask the guys from Superior to make it available which they then make downloadable as free update before the next day if they can. Which makes it a universal remote unlike any other IR remote that is also capable in controlling 4 different devices in one remote at the same time too!

After this repair it is again time for me to order a couple of new 2200uF 16V capacitors because they were the only ones I still had left.

Relatively very less complicated work, perhaps undertaken by you for a break! Good job! Fixing a DVD player is always an interesting job! Well done!

You may be right. It was the only repair inbetween a few new projects I recently was busy with. But the superb SUPERIOR IR remote control is something I think is worth mentioning. I do not think there is anything like it.

Yes of-course! Superior IR Remote Control is something new for me and I read it a lot of times to grasp it.

As said a good product that I use myself that deserves credit and attention:

This is the Superior 4in1 by USB on PC programmable remote:

      https://www.ebay.nl/itm/Superior-Freedom-4-in-1-Universal-Programmable-Remote-Control-Micro-USB-Black/283227824256?hash=item41f1b1a080:g:ON8AAOSwOU9b0cD4:rk:1:pf:0

If you have the Superior 4in1 IR programmable remote you need this IR programmer too which also uses the USB PC port:

Free software and >260.000 codes on:

      Cheers!

It is Robert! And every device has an unique IR code in the Superior database plus often also a PDF with the layout of the keys on the Superior 4in1 remote control. Every time you hook-up the remote to (re-)program all 4 IR codes or just a single IR code, the Superior database upgrades online to the newest database version with ALL IR codes. Using those other different ultracheap universal programmable IR remote controllers often became a big disappointment when after hours of trying none of my devices responded. I'm glad that both my Superior 4in1 (1xUSB and 1xIR programmable) remotes always work, programming is fast and supereasy, and they really never disappoint!
