usb mouse repair

Long back I repaired this mouse by replacing damaged retractable USB cord to normal USB Cord.

Now again received for repair stated problem; it was dropped down on floor & stopped working. So for testing I connected it on my setup, I found both the switches are clicking & working fine but cursor is not moving on the screen of monitor.  I also found Mouse is making some noise when shake.

So now time for internal inspection. I opened the Mouse to find out what type of broken part is moving inside?

I found one electrolytic capacitor is out of the circuit. Does this part cause above said problem symptom? I do not think so.

So I started to find out from which location this capacitor is came off. I did not found the location on top PCB so I opened the top PCB to check other circuit underneath.

Not found any sign of part removed from that circuit also. Actually I am looking for the sign of electrolytic capacitor marking on the PCB. Generally, mark is like this.

Again I checked the top circuit solder side if I found any sign.

Found this solder joints not having any component on other side.

I removed top PCB stickers & I found the location ….

(Some time things are not as per our imagination) …. I soldered the capacitor back to his location.

mouse fix

After soldering the capacitor back to its location, I connected the mouse again on my setup for testing but it not resolved the problem ….

So I started checking all the cables one by one. Everything is OK except Laser diode.

In normal mouse you will have the red LED sensor light on bottom side so when you connect the mouse to computer this LED will light up. But this mouse is having LASER DIODE which is not illuminate.

Generally, this diode does not go bad but this is main part who does movement of cursor on the screen. Checked wires of diode looks intact.

So here visual inspection will not work. Hence I checked USB Cable continuity again but it is showing OK. Now I concentrated to the LASER DIODE again.

I removed the LASER DIODE cable socket from the PCB.

At the time of removing cable, I feels wires are giving some different feeling on my finger like I am holding a thread, it does not have strength like wire soldered on something will remain in the same state. But this wires are moving like thread….

So I decide to remove & resolder the wires, I removed heat shrink sleeve of one wire & found that wire is hanging and came out of solder joint same way removed other wire sleeve found same problem now I found the culprit. Wires are holding place because of heat shrink tube but internally it was disconnected.

So resoldered both the wires by applying new heat shrink tube.

mouse repair and fix

After soldering the wires on the laser diode I connected the mouse on my setup again for testing & now this time cursor starts moving.

Very intricate work done on a mouse just to derive satisfaction of having fixed it, I think! Well done! The heat shrinking sleeves can become a bother sometimes. It is difficult to assume too!

Nice repair article that shows that everything is worth repairing! Even when it needed a second repair after it accidentally was dropped on to the floor.
