Videocon LCD TV StandBy Mode Repaired
This Videocon LCD TV complaint was red light or in standby mode and it can’t be turned on using the remote control or even by pressing on the front panel power button.
Usually standby mode problem in TV is caused by the mainboard section or improper dc supply voltage by the SMD voltage regulator IC.
Once the cover was removed, I could see three circuit boards. One is the power supply board, one is the Inverter board and the last one was Mainboard or Main SMD IC board.
I took out my digital multimer to check on the SMD voltage regulator ICs 2.5 volt and 3.3 volt and both ICs were found to be good.
The 12 volt and the 5 volts were presence also.
Since the DC supply voltages were good, I now focused on the mainboard MCU IC. This IC was covered with a metal shielding and once it was removed I was surprised to see dead ants and dust on the IC legs/pins. See the two photos below:
Next, I cleaned up the IC area using a used tooth brush and with a cleaning solution.
Once done the cleaning, I do a reflow on the IC using my SMD rework station.
When I put back the mainboard and powered On, the display came out and no more red light-problem solved! If you want to learn how to repair LCD or LED TV you can check out Kent’s ebook here and Damons’ ebook here. If you are a beginner in LCD TV repair you can check out John’s ebook here.

Nice repair. The insects keep crawling into the electronics devices a lot in India. I guess they come to enjoy for the generated warmth of the electronics. Its nature gives and nature takes.....

Hi. Nice Job!!
Tell me is that a tube of flux I see? Do you use it before reflow on all pins?
Do you prefer liquid flux or flux paste?

I just can't get enough of stories about dead ants, bugs, cockroach eggs, even lizards in TV sets! 🙂 Organic failures in electronics, so to speak.

Suranga, thank you for another fine article. Here in the northern US the problem in the winter is mice (small rodents). They find warmth in my shop. I kept them out with a very high frequency rodent control device but unfortunately it affected my pets in our attached home since the hf travels through the power lines. So now I use clothes dryer softener sheets which have a pleasant aroma to me but not the rodents. All the best to you. And thank you Jestine and wife for publishing these fine articles to us world wide.

Well done Suranga, thanks for sharing.
We use to have a lot of damages done by ants in Brazil, specially in ECG equipment. The formic acid is conductive and corrodes everything. Those ants look for a warm place to set up their colony. In some apparatus there were thousands of them with eggs all over the places. I still remember the characteristic smell...
Cheers,
Gerald

Nice Job, Suranga! I remembered the phrase 'ants in pants', when I read your article. But now it is 'ants in ics' (Ha, Ha!) You just see how these help us get a set for service! I have seen dead lizards in CRT TVs with stinking and nauseating smell! Cleaning such things is a tough job, especially when the flesh is burnt and stuck to the protruding pins on the PCB!
You have done a nice repair work! All the best!
