5 KW Domestic Stabiliser Repair
By Jestine Yong on March 15, 2025
This domestic stabiliser was brought to me with complaints of shutting down once its connected to load after few minutes. The customer said he uses it to power his water purifier machine, he produces sachet drinking water for sales.
So I connected it to a/c wall socket and plug in 100 watt bulb, on switch, bulb lit.
So I assumed it to be a small problem, I removed metal cover and observed the single board, to my surprise a couple of components are rusted and there are dry joints.
The following components are rusted, they tested good though: variable resistors 5 kohms (5), 1815 transistors (11), led bulbs (5), 7mm×7mm switch (2).
Having replaced all these, I carried out esr of all e- caps on board…..all good. Then did patching of all dry joints mostly pins of e- caps and color band resistors.
NOTE : When repairing domestic stabiliser, always check the polarity of led bulbs marks on board and compare with anode and cathode of bulb before desoldering bad bulb out. In this case two bulbs were marked wrongly.
Then reassembled device and tested it with 1.5h window air-conditioning device and it worked perfectly. Called owner for collection. Pictures below explain more of finished repair work.

Those potentiometers sure looked very rusty! Interesting to see that all eleven 1815 transistors although good but also rusted were replaced too. I suppose that chances are that the replacement parts start to get rusty too because of the water purifier machine it is used for to power it.
