One Vertical Or Horizontal Line Across LCD Monitor Screen

By on August 19, 2008

If you come across any LCD Monitor that have a permanent one vertical or one horizontal line across the LCD screen then most probably you need to replace the LCD Panel as both the problems can’t be repair due to the fault could be in the LCD driver IC, LCD Controller board or even the broken TCP package or problem with the TAB bonding.

One vertical or one horizontal line problem in LCD Monitor is totally different from when you are repairing the CRT Monitor. If there is one vertical line problem, you will be looking at the fault at the horizontal section or even with an open horizontal yoke coil (which is very rare) and if there is one horizontal line across CRT Monitor screen, then you will be concentrating on the vertical section. It could be a drj joints, bad vertical IC, missing supply IC, bad corresponding components or even missing the main waveform from the horizontal/vertical oscillator IC.

The problem in CRT Monitor is quite direct and you can solve the problem fast but this is different in the LCD Monitor as it contains more complex circuit as most of the signals running are digital signals. LCD Monitors have many databus lines carrying lots of digital signals. The conclusion is the only choice to solve the permanent one vertical or one horizontal problem is to directly replace the LCD panel.

I had an increasingly persistant horizontal line on a 2006 Dell Inspiron 1300. I'd like to tell you how I fixed it, since your site came up very near the top on my google search of the problem, and I've never seen this solution anywhere.

When I opened up the laptop, there was a line across the display, always the same place. Wiggle the top, sometimes it goes away. One day, on a whim, I squeezed the case top around the area of the line. The line went away.

Finally, I read the Service Manual on how to remove the display bezel. Then, not removing ANY PART OF THE DISPLAY ASSEMBLY, I pulled the little pads and screwed the bezel down tight. ALL THE SCREWS WERE LOOSE. Not surprising, really, the unit has been in daily use for three years. Problem solved. If I open the display far enough I can still get the line to appear, but that is nearly 180 degrees open, which is not a problem. I have not seen the line since.

    Hope this helps someone.

    HI Amamrsingh,

Check the vertical output ic. Make sure there is supply voltage to the ic and no dry joints. If all check to be good then direct replace the vertical output ic and retest.

Could you please elaborate on "No dry joints".
The line in my monitor appeared after I cleaned it with Windex/Colin. The cleaner liquid went into the side of the monitor. Now i have a some pixels turned white there and also a half moon halo(cloud patch but its clear only the light half circle halo).
Then the line comes from the bunch of white pixels.
My mome had come and found my monitor dusty so she cleaned it while it was off. When I returned I saw my monitor was bent forward.
When I opened it I saw the white pixels had reduced and the line was gone.
The half moon halo was still there.

After 3 months the line appeared again. I had to tap it it would go.
Now again it started getting persistent and no amount of tapping would make it go.
So I pressed it at the bezel and its gone.

So I was wondering if this could be the cleaner liquid that went inside and spoiled the connector or the ribbon inside?(or whatever is inside you would know better you are the expert 🙂 ).

I wanted to ask you if opening and cleaning it with some alcohol or other cleaners will help solve the problem permanently?

      Please Advise. Thank you

If by pressing it and the lines gone this means there is a dry contact in the TCP (Tap[e carrier package). It would be very difficult to join it back if you do not have the right tools (hot press bonding machine). Cleaning with alcohol or other cleaners will not solve this problem.

    Dear Jestine
Our company can repair this type of problem. Normally this is caused by faulty TAB IC inside the LCD panel and fortunately we have the equipment to repair it. Our technology comes from Korea and we have been operating since last year. Kindly visit our website and our FB page for more information

      Hi Affzan,

Wow! good to know that your company could provide such repair services. I will bookmark your website. What about the price of fixing a 17" 19" and 22" LCD PANEL with vertical problem? How long will it take?
