This colour TV belonged to my son’s in-laws.  During one of my visits, when they told me they had a problem with this TV, I removed its board and brought it home for rectification. The TV was dead, earlier to which, the remote was not working for quite some time.

After cleaning the board up thoroughly, on visual inspection I found that one 1000uF/25V capacitor was bulgy. Checked and found out that ESR of two more capacitors were out.

Found very dark burnt marks under the Rectifier diodes on the secondary side.

Replaced these three capacitors and also replaced the strained diodes after scraping the board clean to the extent possible. Replaced the remote sensor, as all other associated components were found ok.

The board was lying with me for a few weeks, as I wanted to club my visit to their place along with any other needs to visit that area.  Recently, I had some function to attend in their town and went to their house in the evening and fixed the board, and switched on.

The TV worked very well.  Since the screen voltage adjustment in Philips is very critical, I had taken precautions not to disturb the control while cleaning and handling the board.

Another job added to my satisfaction list, without any complications and confusions!

The strained rectifier diodes probably were out of spec or defect like the e-caps were. So replacing them was of course unavoidable.
I guess the cleaning out of dust as you always do take very serious was just extra service.

I have not succeed in repairing PHILIPS CRT TVs due this adjustment problems. Do you have any idea regarding correct method to adjust the screen voltage. Most of the time TV set will auto shutdown.

The method for adjusting screen voltage in Philips CRT tvs, is to keep pressing the channel button up and/or down, then adjust the screen voltage. At one point it will remain still. Then leave it and put a mark on LOT for guidance in future.

I have found that with CRT TVs the ESR on electrolytic capacitors was not critical. What was critical was the capacitance and most times bad-caps showed up as bulging or vented at the pins or at the top. I places where ESR is critical you would notice TANTALUM type electrolytic capacitors. Good job.

That was good,at last it was repaired. My young brother 21"Philips TV was dead. After opening, found nothing wrong.Tested power to LOP transistor collector point, it was 77Vdc, not good to light CRT tube. P/se help to light it up.

Disconnect resistor going to B+ of LOT (FBT). Connect a 100 W as a load to B+ rail. Switch on, check voltage. It should be around 110 or more (sometimes 140 also used). To know exactly, look for a 3 legged regulator IC in that input line. Check its datasheet online to know its output voltage. If you are getting correct reading, power supply is OK. Else look for defects in primary and secondary. If PS is OK, you may have to check audio, vertical and horizontal sections.

Perhaps the horuzontal trafo is causng a heavy load on the smps, why not take it out and check if the smps works ok.

I guess the burnt area became conductive a bit.
