Two Way Speaker System With No Sound Repaired
A friend of mine at church brought this two way sound system for repair. He works in the city of Jericho which is about one hour drive from my workshop. He is having electrical problems the whole time. Last week, a fridge, power regulator and this two way speaker system were damaged because of this power issues at that location.
It is an old two way speaker system but very nice one.
When I powered it on and added a sound source to it, there was not sound coming out of the speakers.
I took it apart and the first thing I checked were the speakers inside the housing. The big speaker checked fine but the inside tweeter speaker was found faulty. (The tiny speaker you see in the photo is irrelevant to the case).
The big transformer was working fine but I found four faulty components on that board. The two 5 amp fuses were found open and two diodes were shorted as well.
Part number of the two diodes is 1N4148 which I have plenty of in my shop.
I replaced both diodes and I powered on the speakers but sad to see there was no sound.
The reason there was no sound because I forgot to plug in the speaker to the system but the moment I did that, the sound came out loud and clear. Sometimes I get distracted so easily that it almost caused me another hour of finding out the fault. LOL.
I could not find a replacement for the faulty tweeter speaker (I did not even try to) because the customer liked the sound the way it was after adjusting the equalizer on that system.

"The reason there was no sound because I forgot to plug in the speaker to the system" - What an honest statement, that made me laugh too! Good job there! I wished that you could replace the Tweeter. In fact, it can be opened and rectified as I have covered it in one of my articles! The wire gets cut due to corrosion.

I have fixed many tweeters that are open.key is magnifying glasses and a steady hand a d alit of patiece.proublem is worse in coastal areas close to ocean.salt water.i use very fine wire from discarded ear pieces.use a dab of flux and a very hot soldering iron to melt covering on broken lead.tin each lead to bite shiny solder,then add jumper.have to be very careful not to touch cone with soldering iron.if the coil is burned from over powering you can remind coil with fine magnet wire as original.a tiny dab of super glue keeps wie in place.if paper coil form is burned you can use razor blade to cut it out and replace with home made paper form have to use imagination.i look for round house hold items laying around.somethung us bound to match.tberes special glue they use for cones on ebay.i use superglue or a little dab of epoxy with toothpick. If you are successful you should read low ohms with ohmeter.ahain patience a d a good note sleep is important for a steady hand ,but not as critical as working on cellphones. cheers

Mike: sounded like a surgery to me LOL. I ever attempted to repair any kind of speakers but thank for the detailed input. the customer was happy the way it sounded so he did not want to replace the tweeter because it is old and did not want to spend extra money on it. have a good day

Hi all: I really enjoy reading your repair work - I learn so much from reading them! I have a suggestion for you - sell every customer a high quality surge suppressor so voltage spikes will not harm the electronic equipment. I have installed suppressors inside equipment, but external units are also quite effective, as they are on a cord about a half metre long, giving more resistance before the suppressor does the job and absorbs voltage spikes. yes, I had that in mind but the place where this guy located they have a constant power failure and they are working on the problem. I already talked my Pastor about it ( my customer also) and once it is all safely up and running we will do a lot of change safety wise. I appreciate the suggestion and have a very good day

Audio is not my thing, and fixing speakers neither. But I know that like in the way that a speaker can be used as a microphone also Piëzo-elements (4.4 kHz, 200 Ohm) can be used as a transducer. This way picking up the oscillating sounds of much higher frequencies. Which can be seen on the crt of any oscilloscope. A friend of mine had a electronic ultrasonic Dog-whistle and asked me to find out if it was working. I was able to find an oscillating frequency of about 26KHz.
