No Power In Rice Cooker Repaired

This Richsonic rice cooker came in for repair with the complaint of no power. Since the power cable and fuse were checked to be good, this means it was the internal fault and the rice cooker need to be opened for troubleshooting.

It was pretty obvious where the problem was once the cover was removed. As you can see from the photo below, there was a burnt thermal fuse.

When I checked on the burnt fuse with my digital multimeter, it showed an open circuit reading .

Visual inspection was used to check on other parts beside the main fuse. All wirings/cables, nuts and screws were seems to be in good condition. I concluded that only the fuse was the cause of the problem.

I had the stock for this fuse and the rating was 10 ampere with 250 volt…see the photo  below:

Once the fuse replacement was done, I powered up the rice cooker and it got back to normal again.

Conclusion- If after powering up the rice cooker and the fuse still burn, this indicates there could be something shorted. Below is a video how electric rice cooker works:

    When repairing for profit we are often taught not to worry ourselves about WHY a component failed. Simply fix the issue and move on. But since this article gives me the opportunity to ask a master repairman on his thoughts about the cause of the blown fuse. Suranga, have you any ideas on why the fuse blew?

      Thermal fuses only react to excessive temperature, not excessive current, unless the excessive current is sufficient to cause the thermal fuse itself to heat up to the trigger temperature

    Electric rice cookers are always much safer than the ones that are often still used on a stove with the risk of fires. Especially when the electric cookers switch off when they have reached the final cooking process.

    If you can check the operating amperage, you could verify the the heating elements are operating at their normal wattage, by calculating the supplied voltage with the amperage. The wattage should be stated on the unit. fuses do their job, to prevent over current conditions.
