Diode Failures

By on September 3, 2007

A diode can fail in one of four ways. It can become open, shorted, leaky and intermittent. Just by using an analog meter, it can measure almost all of the symptoms except the intermittent failure. If you suspect the diode have intermittent problem, just direct replace it since diode replacement is quite easy to get and cheap too. Make sure you power off the equipment before checking it with your meter.

      Hi Dalganjan,

You can't test an intermittent diode problem in a live circuit. You can either direct replace and retest or test the diode up to the rated voltage/ampere with a special tester but you need to test it off board.
