Celebrating Independence Day
By Jestine Yong on August 31, 2010
Today (31st of August), my country is celebrating Independence Day (Merdeka in Malay Language) and it is a public holiday. I was not born yet at that time. When i was young, i could see from TV about the parade and i had even participated one of the parade back in 1980. I was given Rm10.00, a set of uniform, a mini flag and a cap to walk in the parade. Back then Rm10.00 is a big money. If you would like to know the meaning of Merdeka please click on the photo above. For all Malaysians-Merdeka! By the way, I did not go for holidays except to meet up my inlaws later for gathering and have dinner with them.

I followed the link in the picture and read the history of the formation of Malaysia. I grew up in Hong Kong, another former British colony and my very first English textbooks were from Malaya and told stories about your country.
Among the guests of honor was Sir Alexander Grantham who was the Governor of Hong Kong when I was there. I didn't much about him as I was too young. I followed his link and read his life story and brought myself up to date with the history of Hong Kong.
I also read about Princess Alice,Duchess of Gloucester. She lived to the ripe old age of 102 and is the oldest person in the history of the British Royal Family.
Thanks for posting about Merdeka.
