A friend of mine had this cooker for a while and one day he powered on the device but nothing came on. He heard a loud pop coming from inside and the earth leakage tripped.

Usually I do not work on such devices but I was willing to help out since he

is a friend of mine that grew up together in this same school.

how to fix cooker

I did not try to power it on but right away I started to take the screws off on the bottom of the device but that did not get me any closer to the power board.

how to repair a cooker

I checked online for any kind of help on how to get to the power board but found none so I decided to take a risk here and take it apart.

I finally got to the power board and that is by taking the top of the device off; there were clips holding the top and I used some force to get it off but I was nervous when I did but finally it was done.

The moment I took the top cover off I was able to see the power board and the damage was very obvious to me as well.

burnt varistor

Here is a closer look of the power board and the damage on it. The varistor and resistor fuse were blown as seen in the photo.

VARISTOR CRACKED

It is a 22 ohm resistor and right away I replaced it with a good one and replaced the varistor as well. Of course I did a quick check on the surrounding components and find all of them ok so it was time to put everything together and test.

HOW TO FIX A COOKER WITH NO POWER

I powered the device through a current limiter and the machine came on but I cannot test the machine while power on through a current limiter so I powered it on normally and turned the heat on and the heating element was getting hot that way it should and I was happy with the outcome.

I called the customer for pick up but he was on his way to the airport so he called his brother to come to my shop and pick up the machine.

Mission Accomplished.

Top knotch Waleed. Did you see the issue with the varistor or was it determined bad after testing with a meter? I only ask bcos it looks fine from the photo.

I appreciate your honest statement that you were nervous while trying to open. In fact, I still undergo this stage whenever a new device comes to me, but some amount of foolhardiness pushed by curiosity helps me finally open it. That was a good fix, my dear friend and thanks for sharing it.

Parasuraman: It freeks me out when I open something for the first time. I would be afraid of causing new damge to already damaged device but we need to keep our head held high and our brain up to date for such repair. LOL. have a blessed day and you are most welcome my friend.

Not being able to cook our food would be a bad thing, just like not heaving a refrigerator to prevent food from going bad! Nice job!

Well done and a enjoyable repair!
I'm always quite unfamiliar with the color code of those big high power resistors. on the smaller 1/4Watts it's not a problem.
Can you tell me, how this is a 22 ohms? Cause i only see one red ring; but for 22 it should be two set of rings. I don't understands.

Pual: thanks man. I am glad you enjoyed the article. yes it is red red and black which comes up to 22 ohms. you can get an app on your phone that can help you to find out the values of these resistors. there are resistors that can have up to 6 bands so it is a little bit confusing. have a blessed day
