About Capacitance Value

By on November 9, 2010

There are many different types of capacitors in the market like the mica, ceramic, electrolytic, tantalum and etc. Different types of capacitor have difference tolerance value. In order to avoid the confusion of what is the tolerance value of each type of capacitor, i would just use minus 10% as a guideline. For example, if the non polarity capacitor have the value of 1 nano farad (nf) then this mean when we test the capacitor, the value should not go below 0.9 nf otherwise we have to replace the cap. Even if the cap is in the borderline (say 0.9 or 0.91nf) , i would still replace it because i believe the cap value will continues to drop after few months time.

For electrolytic capacitor, we can use the ESR meter thus not necessary to know about the capacitance value although there are some rare cases where the ESR check to be okay but the capacitance value were out.

Your suggestions on DVD repair is very helpful. However, I have a DVD in my shop that is still giving the same error- no disc dispite the fact that all the above mention problems are sorted out. There is an additional problem though- only the STOP/EJECT key gives response. Can you suggest what is the possible cause?

    HI Clinton,

If it still have problem then you may need to replace the lens/or the assembly. In your case, when you said only the buttons working normally then most probably the mainboard have problem that had caused the error. Mainboard problem is one of the hardest to detect due to lack of parts availability and repair information in the internet.

    Hi Jestine,

Talking about capacitors, my nephew told me that some capacitors from China doesn't have the right uf readings. 2 new capacitors was blown up. After checking through the fault is with the capacitor written on it is 470uf , but actually testing with ESR it's readings is 900uf ++. So it's better to check first with ESR before fixing it up ( All new capacitors )The capacitor is dark brown color type.
