Futile Efforts To Replace Polarizer Sheets In LG Monitor Model W1642S

how to fix lcd monitor polarizer

This monitor belonged to the hospital and I brought it home to try replacing the polarized sheets. After opening and cleaning the inside, I dismantled the Panel Unit, by removing the metal frame, the reflector/diffuser sheets. Then started peeling the bottom sheet as it was also in bad shape. Kindly see the snaps taken while the work was in progress.

Thinner and different kinds of blades were used to peel the sheet and the layer of gum underneath. First the film was removed followed by the layer of gum. Then the surface was cleaned very well to shine like a mirror:

Then I did the same on the other side too. Then fixed the rear side film smoothly ensuring that there were no air bubbles. This requires precision and patience as we may have to peel and re-affix to let out air bubbles.

The angle of the top film was checked for its correct resolution and convergence of RGB. Kindly see the picture below, which shows that slightly tilted angle was the best suited:

While checking like this, I overlooked the bottom right portion, which was blank and went ahead with fixing the front sheet also very well. (Forgot to mention that the films are cut from 32” LED TV polarizer sheets) After finishing the work which took several hours of hard work, I applied the signal only to see that the bottom right portion was blank with some liquid peeped in. Though I checked whether there was any spill from the rear and top film, I could not find any.

The liquid leak had penetrated between the two glasses of the panel, causing damage to the liquid crystals. Alas, the work was completed satisfactorily, but with a futile result. I removed and stored the scalar board, LVDS Cable and boards with its metal case for salvaging if and when found necessary.

This seems to me again to be another well presented example of something we should avoid doing. Especially because the success rate is null even when done by a pro like you dear Parasuraman. Something I wouldn't even consider of doing.
And possibly also for the health risks that are not worth it when the liquid starts to leak from the plates or the glass splinters. Plus for the way too long time it takes to even finish such an impossible task!

    Sir,
Repairing a dead/no picture or no backlit TV is always a risky job in case of panel problem. We get to know after the process but what if customer says that when I gave you the TV the full screen was fine before & it required only outer film has to change.
very difficult to tackle these type of situation where we are not aware of pre hidden problems.

On such situations, we need to put conditions before accepting. Like an advance bail, in case of an arrest of a different kind! Many thanks for your comments and concern!

We, technicians, are rather geosynchronised and respect and regard each other, which make us united globally! Jestine Yong's this wonderful platform enables such lovely interaction, which make one curious to read articles published every week end like children awaiting Mandrake or Phantom serials! Many thanks, dear Mark for your involvement and continous support and encouragement! May God bless you!

Thanks senior technician, Parauraman. TV/monitor screens are mostly of LCD, LED and plasma type, what type was the one you were repairing ?. I agree with what Engineer Yogesh says, unless a technician is keen a 'tricky customer' can push him in a tight corner. So the receipts we give to clients should have relevantly necessary conditions. Some printed warnings should also be put on our walls to be easily read by clients, which also scares away would be cheats. Pricy TVs and mobile phones are expensive to compensate. Cracks and discoloured areas on some screens are easily revealed in bright sunlight, LUCKLY !

Yes, dear, it is a very risky job that we are all handling! But that's a part of the task and we chose this line knowing very well the consequences. So, let us face it, as every problem that comes in front of us provides us enouch experience and that is a gain and not a loss! Many thanks for your detailed comments covering important aspects!

All well said comments, however what baffles me is why would you want to keep the scalar board since it's attached to a bad screen.

If you had not tried the repair , you would have never known if that one could have have been a Win Win for the satisfactory bag . If everything comes easy to a man he is not a Sage man ........ He is a computer ....
