Infrared Thermometer

By on March 20, 2012

It was quite some time already that I heard from repair tech that one could use an infrared thermometer to detect components that heats up and give problem-mostly semiconductors. This means that one could point the gun to the suspected component and monitor the temperature. If the temperature keeps on rising then either the component or the corresponding components have problem. Our fingers have limitation in detecting the heat and it is not advisable to place our fingers in high voltage section. With this thermometer you can check on any component temperature even while the equipment is working. Just point the laser beam to the component and read from the bright LCD display. You can check on the CRT/TV HOT easily with this meter.

Since I just got this Victor Infrared thermometer today I have not fully tested this meter yet. It came with a manual (in Chinese) and without the 9 volt battery. You can select to enable /disable the laser beam. You also could select either Celsius or Fahrenheit. Below are the photos of the meter:

      Hi Beh,

You are right this is a good piece of equipment. It could be used to troubleshoot on intermittent problems cause by components.

    Hi Jestine,

I wish I could have infrared cameras which can capture images of energy or temperature . This thermal imaging or thermography, detects heat patterns or temperature changes in objects. These changes allow the user to discover problems prior to costly breakdown, or monitor developing problems. More information at Fluke Thermal Imagers.

      Hi Boling,

That is a good one. I have checked on the price and it was about USD4500+

Does the infrared thermometer be able to take tempreture of ic's to show if it's bad. And i will like to ask if you have come across or know more about a 'work tracer' software for repairs. I only know its a windows based software package. Pls, if you have an ideal on it post me a comment.

      Hi Daniel,

If the IC is getting hot then the meter could detect it. Replace the ic if the temperature is rising. Do not replace the ic if the tempareture is stagnant. I have no heard about the wordtracker sofware perhaps I need to google it.

I bought this exact Infrared Thermometer and was disappointed. The thermometer did not fuction completely dead after installing the batteries. I tried several new batteries and the same result. I dont know if it is because of poor internal quality or if it damaged during shipping. I will keep you advised.
    Thanks

      Hi Vic,

I guess during shipping the meter already have problem. Mine still functioning well. Sometimes we can't expect good quality product from China since the price is cheap in the market.
