 hakko presto 981 solder gun

I received emails asked about what type of soldering gun that I’m using for Repairing work ? My answer to them was Hakko Presto 981 solder gun. I like this soldering gun because it has two operating wattages – 20W and 130W, which can be switched by simply pressing a button according to the component size you want to solder. That means if you want to remove big components from the board like flyback transformer, switch mode transformer and etc i will press the button so that it will switch to130 watt which is easier to melt the big joints otherwise i will just leave the press button.

The reliability is very good and the money spent were worth it. If the tip of the solder gun had degraded, you can always get a new parts for it without buying another new gun. All of my techs are using this hakko presto 981 solder gun.

    Hi Jestine,

My Presto has suddenly died. The soldering iron gets warm, but the tip never heats up anymore (i can touch the tip of the iron and it wont burn me). Can you please tell me the best course of action? Should i buy a new presto or can you refer me to the replacement part(s)? Is it just the tip that needs replacement?

    HI Kenny,

You may need to change the tip and you can buy it from electronic store that sell Hakko Products/spare parts. If you already use the gun for more than few years, i suggest that you get a new gun instead of replacing the tip.
