A Blinking LED Light Repaired And Maintained

As I was visiting my niece and her husband at their house, I noticed a nice looking light attached to the ceiling but it was not on. I asked my niece about it and she said it does not work because it keeps blinking and it is irritating to us so we keep it off all the time. So I offered to help out.

led light repair

The next day her husband brought the light to my shop for repair; I went ahead to see what is causing the light to blink.

From experience, usually when a LED light blinks it has to do with bad capacitors in the power supply or simply one of the tiny LED lights is about to burn so it blinks and takes the whole system with it.

led light tester

With my LED tester I tested the first Y side of the lights and they all came on but when I tested the X side of the lights, it did not come on.

I powered on the power supply without the light attached to it, there was a buzzing sound coming out of the power supply.

With the help of the ESR meter I found two bad caps and I replaced them with new ones.

bulged caps

These were 2.2 UF/50 volts each and once I got them installed on that board, the buzzing was gone but now I hear sparks and smelled something burning.

This pin that connects to the X side of the LEDS was loose causing sparks so I re-soldered that pin and tests it out but this time there was no buzzing and no sparking but the LEDs did not come on.

bad led light

I tested it again with my LED light tester and one of the LEDs burnt out and I could see a tiny black dot in the center of it. I replaced it with a jumper wire and tested the device; all the lights came on and it was bright.

So I took the jumper off and soldered a new LED light in there, not the best soldering but it did the job. Take a look

Mission Accomplished.

While this wasn't a particularly complicated circuit, you demonstrated a very logical, step by step approach to resolving the issue. Thanks for a good example of fault finding.

Good service and nice that you were able to help family! It indeed can be most disturbing having to look at a constantly blinking light.

Your LED tester, was it store bought or did you make one in the shop?

Good job, your persistence paid off! It’s always disappointing when you find bad capacitors and think the problem is resolved then you replace them and it gets worse (smoking). Anyway, I’m sure your niece and family are happy.

Michael: thanks. the smoke was because of loose wire not because of the capacitors. they were happy to get that fixed. have a blessed day
