A Dead Asus Laptop Were Brought Back to Life Partially
A guy next door brought his dead laptop to my shop for repair. The customer said that water was spilled on it last week but the laptop was working the whole time and gone dead only that morning.
It seems like a nice laptop and I did not see any kind of liquid spill on the outside part of it but it is time to open it and find out the fault.
The customer said this laptop was in his wife’s bag and there was a bottle of water inside and it seems like the bottle was leaking water and got into the laptop; the wife on the other hand asked her husband to take it to a technician to be checked and the husband said that as long it is working there is no need to be checked. That was an argument going on in my shop and I tried not to laugh but I told them I will do what I can to make it work. LOL.
When I checked the mother board inside I could see some signs of water damage on two areas of the board.
That is another area with water damage but when I cleaned both areas nothing changed, the laptop was still dead and no sign of life on it.
I connected the laptop to an external power supply and checked with the thermal camera for any heat spots but still nothing was found. I did voltage check at the main power port and I was getting the right voltage which is 19 DC volts but the rest of the laptop the voltage readings were very low indication a short.
I started unplugging things and check if the laptop was coming on and I was lucky to see that when I unplugged the screen connecter the laptop powered on just fine.
If you look at this photo, you would see the damaged caused by water that shorted out the whole laptop.
The laptop came on and the battery was getting a charge indicated by these two while LED lights that all was well.
I powered the laptop and connected it through an HDMI cable to my TV and as seen, the laptop was working just fine.
I took the screen off and I checked the other side of the screen cable; it was damaged as well.
I came to a conclusion that both the screen and the screen cable are faulty and needed a replacement.
I checked with the customer about ordering both parts but when we checked the prices the customer was not happy with and decided to look for used ones; so far we have not locates used ones so finally he decided to order both parts and at the mean time he and his wife could use the laptop via an HDMI connection till the parts arrive.
Two weeks later I got a call from the customer stating that he changed his mind about ordering the parts and decided to buy a new laptop. He paid me generously for the time and work spent on the laptop and
Mission Accomplished (half way) but that is fine by me.

Your mission got accomplished for sure! A customer's decision to go for a new one is his prerogative and we have no say on that! But he was very decent to pay your charges and that is what we all need ultimately for our sustenance! Thanks for sharing, dear friend!

Did the customer completely discard his now defect laptop or did he still took it home?
Because I guess it still had value and nevertheless can be used when connected to a tv or monitor for going online or other uses.
