A Digital Audio Player With USB Broken On Board Repaired
A man next door brought this digital audio player for repair and showed me the broken USB port on that board. That player is for his son and he wants it as soon as possible.
The USB port is very close to the plastic socket and if I use the workstation I will be exposing the socket to heat and it will melt so I had to do the old fashion way.
Also if you look to the white socket on that board you would see one of the pins in that socket is melted already and this has to be replaced or fixed somehow.
So the first task was done and the white socket was soldered off board; the next step is the broken USB port. This photo is of the other side of the board.
Since the socket was off board I was able to take the broken USB port using my rework station using a low met solder on the pins.
I did not have a brand new USB port but I was able to take this port from a used machine that I have laying down in the shop.
The extract was done in no time using my work station and a low melt solder.
The USB port was soldered successfully on board. I added flux to the pins of the USB port and soldered them nicely and then made it more solid but adding solder to the side of the metal body of the port.
I re soldered the white socket on board (sorry no photo) and I glued the loose pin and it worked just fine.
Sorry it is a little bit out of focus but it is clearly seen that the port is soldered fine on board and to that I could say
Mission Accomplished.

The only important disadvantage of using low melt solder could be that its joint is weaker or that it can't be used in higher temperature environments were the solder would liquefy more easily.

And yet lead based solder is less suceptible to fatigue compared to higher melting point unleaded solder.

Forgot to say, he seems to have used lower melting point solder for extraction not the final installation.

Anwar: yes. low melt is only used for extraction not the final soldering. have a blessed day

Anwar: low melt solder is used only to de solder when I put the replace the part I add normal solder NOT low melt solder. have a blessed day

Albert: you use low melt solder to de solder stuff out only. Once the stuff is soldered out, you add normal solder for stronger joints. Have a blessed day

I am very puzzled as to why a device like this would have a Type-A USB receptacle built into it. I have searched for a manual but have come up short. I see it is not a stand alone device but rather a audio "headunit" for children's battery powered cars. Could it be they included it so toddlers can charge their cellphones while riding around in the backyard? Hahah!

Tayo: the device is not used for battery powered cars. it is just a tiny device you carry around to hear music through a head phone jack or you can connect it to an amplifier for louder sound. have a blessed day.

At least it wasn't micro USB, they don't seem very tough; the new USB C standard seems more robust.
