A guy working in an organization nearby brought this laptop for repair. It was not powering on. I checked the power supply and it was giving me the right voltage which according to specification was 19 DC volts.

The power LED near the power supply jack was giving me the orange light and later on the LED changed to white which means the battery charging was done but the laptop for some reason was not power on.

I took all the screws of on the back of the laptop and was able to take the front cover off to expose the inside board and find out what is wrong with this device.

I was thinking of the Bios reset and that is usually done by taking the bios battery off and discharging the system but I could not find any bios battery in this laptop and when I checked with a technician he informed me that the power for the bois setting is being taken from the main power battery itself. So I unplugged the battery and discharged the system but the laptop was not coming on.

Well, as you can see, the laptop is on but how did this happen? Let me explain.

After checking all the voltages inside the laptop, all reading were according to specifications but that made me more confused why it was not coming on? And suddenly it hit me, could it be a power button issue? Let us find out. I checked the voltages at the main socket of the power button and I am supposed to get 3.3 DC voltages reading there; I was but when I pressed the power button, these voltages should discharge to ground for a second then come back but for some reason it was not happening. Well, a bad power button issue was confirmed.

When checking the power button from this side of the board everything was fine but when I checked from the other side after taking the power button off; well take a look.

It was damaged and as seen in the photo, part of the trace was torn. I put the power button back and soldered it on board; now it was making complete connection.

I reassembled the laptop and gave it a test and as it was seen in the previous photo, the laptop was alive again. I called the customer and explained the situation but he did not care how it was fixed but he was really happy that it is up and running because he has all his working information on that laptop and he was afraid of losing them all. Anyway it was fixed and to that I can say

Mission Accomplished.

Checking the power button was always one of the routine measurements we did when a laptop refused to start-up when we repaired laptops at my previous job. That you found a laptop without bios/rtc battery is new to me but we need to keep in mind that when the time and date are wrong the Windows browser will refuse to make live connection with the internet because many websites also check for security reasons if the connected computer uses the correct real date and time information.

Well done! This is an area many of us overlook, making simple solutions complex and complicated!

Stanleyd: thank you. the only thing I could think of to why this happened is a misuse of the device. putting two much pressure on the power key to turn the device on is not the right thing to do. thanks for your comment and have a blessed day
