One of my regular customers who is an AC technician called me late at night to inform me about his multi meter being dropped and because of that, the display on the screen was messed up.

He brought it to my shop the next day for check up and when I turned it on, well, you can see the fault in the photo.

The customer mentioned something about the multi meter was dropped and then this happened so it is either the screen is bad or it was not sitting right on its connection pad.

As I took the battery and the four screws off I was able to see what lay beneath and hopefully it will get fixed.

Everything on that board was intact and I was hoping to see a broken board there but I was not that lucky. I can handle broken traces on that board but bad screen means a fail in my repair mission.

The board is out of its housing and so far, it was intact and it was even clean on the inside.

Finally I got to the pins where the screen sits.

The pad that sit on these pins was really dirty and most important, was not sitting right on these pins.

multimeter screen replacement

The screen was not broken on the outside which is a good sign. With a Q tip, I cleaned the connection pad and the pins on board and hoped for the best.

Like the story of a person who put back the engine of a ship to working order, by just hammering on one portion, you know pretty well where to look for a trouble, which is possible only for a professional! A skillful work! Many thanks for sharing!

Broken screens are never fixable so good thing the Liquid Crystal Display was only out of position. When the first touchscreen DMM's are available and become common good, the risk of them to break in these instances is probably much greater.

Imoudu: I would open it and clean it, maybe bad or cold soldering joints..I would find where the resistance connector on the inside of the dial and then trace it and see if there are bad or dirty connections there.
