Mini Tactile ON/OFF Switch Confusion

Just came across same looking Two Different Working Types Mini Tactile On OFF Switch under one heading.

“6 Pin Push Tactile Mini DPDT ON/OFF Self Locking Switch”

One day I got a phone from my friend, he need some electronics spares for his son, who is in engineering college & he needs some spares for some repair. He said to me, if you are going to the market then bring it for me.as per the parts list given to me by my friend, I brought it from the market and gave it to him.

Next day he calls me and said tactile mini DPDT ON/OFF self-locking switches are not working.

(I Brought 10 pcs. For him as he ordered with other material). Here in our market there is no Warranty / Guaranty on the Electronics Parts once you leave his shop.

I told him ask your son to check the circuit if it is ok or not, I discussed with his son he told me he checked working of the PCB by direct shorting terminals of switch solder point circuit is turning ON & problem is with the switch only. I again said to him try with another switches from the pack, he replied he replaced another two switches from same pack but it did not work.

So I told him, I give you one switches you can try it if it works. He collected the switch from me & connected to his device & it worked. I amazed how all the 10 switched are bad? Which I brought for him.

I told him to provide me those bad switches along with working switch which I provided to him for testing and let me check. He sent me all the switches to me.

First I checked all new switches with Multimeter it shows working as follows.

how to test miniature switch

All switches showing same pinout when checked, it confirms switch is OK. Then I checked switch, provided by Me for testing to him.

Now I came to know that a switch that looks the same from outside has different functions from inside. Yes, the head color of both switches is different, but I don’t think so that is identification for different working.

I just called my vendor about this difference he is also not aware of this difference. (though I provided him sample of blue head Switch when purchased & he gave me Black Head Switch saying colour difference is because of different Manufacturers). Just let me know, if you guys having any idea.

Good article that warns us to pay attention when we use these tactile push button switches because of differences in function Yogesh. Thanks for sharing.
But I can't tell you if the color of the switches is linked to the type of switch function.

      Thanks! Albert,
Sometime Miss configured switches can cause shorting in the PCB.
May be size of the switch differentiate.

The switches look like they would possibly open up if you carefully unclip the white/grey upper housing. You may have to destroy both to observe what is going on inside.
It is a good lesson to be learnt that replacement components should be checked for functional compatibility.

I have the blue head switch and they work just fine and they measure exactly how you dicrebed it. I used it for a walking cane for my father. it had a switch like that to turn on/off the light. the original switch was black and I replaced it with a blue switch and it worked just fine. thanks for sharing and have a blessed day

      Waleed,
      I think 7mm X 7mm & 8mm X 8mm switches are of different different connectivity.

Dear Yogesh thanks for cautioning us about a chance for clear understanding
about connecting terminals. Few months back I came across some of the Chinese
companies are marking irrelevant value on the components, Polarity wrong
marking and even wrong IC number to avoid repairing process. Of course more
and more companies trying to sell only for replacement and not repair or
    service.

      Natarajan,
In the rapidly changing technology, it is not clear who is to blame.
still source of reliable original replacement parts are old discarded equipment & circuits.
