A PA Speaker With Popping Loud Sound Repaired And Maintained
Sunday morning and during our church service and as the worship team leading us in hymns, suddenly a loud popping and squealing sound was heard and it was not pleasant. Right away I went where the noise was coming from and shut down the speaker. In the process, a sigh of relief on the entire congregation as they all were covering their ears to avoid hearing this loud noisy sound. The pastor made comments that “now that we are all awake, let us continue with the worship”.
I took this speaker back in the shop the next day to investigate the problem by opening up the device and check were the fault was.
Few screws were off and I was able to be inside the device and everything looked normal till I get to this part of the speaker.
Take a look
The ground cable was loose. Someone has been in this speaker, did some work on it and did not attach this important cable the way it was.
I tied up the ground cable back the way it should be and while I was in this speaker I checked for bad soldering joints and found tons of them. I cleaned the board and re soldered all the bad connections.
I also lubricated the two potentiometers, put the speaker back together and tested in my shop and it was working just fine.
Usually on Friday we have the worship team rehearsal so took the speaker there for further testing and it passed with high stars.
The Pastor was happy with the outcome and the next Sunday the pastor commented about the repair of the speaker that it was sent to the right guy to do the right job and everybody just looked at me… (Awkward moment).

I have repaired subwoofers for our church (bad capacitors) but never received free advertising! Thanks for the write up, I have a small home subwoofer that is occasionally “burping”, you gave me some ideas on where to start looking.
