ATX SMPS Test

atx smps test

ATX SMPS Test is very easy. Just use a scrap motherboard and connect the power supply onto it and place a wire across the two pins shown in the picture below in order to turn the ATX power supply “On”. If possible place two more harddisk to act as load just incase the single motherboard load not enough to switch it on. The symptom could be the fan rotate for a while and then totally stop!

atx power supply on

Be cautious that not all ATX power supply support all kinds of motherboard. Some power supply just need back its own motherboard or system in order to function properly. Hope after reading this tips you should not have any more problem for ATX SMPS Test.

    HI Mangat,

Sorry i do not carry any diagram. I suggest that you check all the components in the primary side. Check also for shorted diodes in the secondary side.

    Sir,
i want to know that floppy drive connector has one red wire to supply 5v and another yellow wire to supply 12v power supply.now my question is why do we need to supply these two wire of different voltage to the floppy drive.

    Hi Vishal,

12 volt is for the motor and 5 volt is for the circuitry.

    Hello,

I have a 9-year-old Pentium 3 based system with a Mercury 815E mainboard and ATX SMPS (230W). Since last week, my PC restarts whenever a CD/DVD is inserted in the DVD drive. Even during a cold boot, if there is a disc in the DVD drive, the PC keeps restarting. Today, I heard some sounds (sparking sounds... but no sparks) coming from the SMPS unit. I searched the web and found out that the SMPS could be faulty. I have a spare SMPS from a Pentium 4 system (10x2 + 2x2 power connectors).

Question: Can I use the SMPS for the Pentium 4 system to power my Pentium 3 system? I need to just connect the 10x2 connector and leave out the extra 2x2 connector meant for Pentium 4 processors. Will this work?

    Thanks in advance...

Good day sir Jestine just want to ask. I have atx psu got repaired by myself. The power is all ok but when i check the voltage out put it turns out that the output is like breathing or fluctuating. the 12v is like 11v to 12v, 5v 4v, 3.3 3v… ..Would you give e some tips if it is on the primary or secondary section…By the way i change all the filter capacitors in the primary and secondary section thanks in advance and more power…

    Hi Varinder,

Have you testes it with a load? Less or missing load could cause it to fluctuate. If you have tested it with a load then there could many reason why it fluctuates-bad PWM IC in the secondary side, faulty components in the primary side and even failure components at the PWM IC area.

My system seems to be mall fuctioning,I figured out the problem is caused by the mall functioning of my smps.I have an Iball cabinet with an intel GV845SR mother board. The symtoms are "The power and hard disk LED blinks for some time when i press the power butten and then stops".When I opened the SMPS box i found some dry soldered joints. So If any one can can help me please leave me a mail.

You mean you found dry joints? So what was your next move? Did you find any bulged e-caps?

DVD is not getting power? Have you check the power supply cable? Make sure the power supply cables is connected to all the hardware in it.

I have a 20 pin SMPS. it is working fine in PC. So I tried to run it directly by shorting green and black wire, but it turns on for a moment only each time I shourt gree and black wire, as I can see the fan working. Please help me to turn it regularly.

    thnx for any suggestions.

I is an old wintron pentium III PC with 140W SMPS.

The pin layout is standard as listed below:

    Pin Color
    1 Orange
    2 Orange
    3 Black
    4 Red
    5 Black
    6 Red
    7 Black
    8 Gray

    10 Yellow
    11 Orange
    12 Blue

    HI Grage,

If you have connected to the motherboard and the fan still turn for a while and stop then this means the power supply itself have problem. You need to check if the filter cap inside have problem or not.

    Thnx Jestine

The problem is solved now. SMPS turns on regularly by shorting green and black wire, either if I connect it to motherboard or connect any other load like HDD or CDROM.

So the problem is solved, but two new questions:

    1. when I connected a 12volt DC motor to yellow and black wire to put a load on SMPS (in place of a HDD or CDROM) and shorted green and black wire again, but it did not turn on. So what is the problem with DC motor load.

    2. someone suggested me to short green wire with red (or yellow) wire instead of putting a load. I works but I think this may damage SMPS in long term usages.

Please suggest me!! should I short green and red wires OR continue using a waste CDROM as load.

    thnx again!!

    HI Grage,

Just short the green and black wire and connect to use cd rom, hdd or motherboard. Make your connection as simple as possible. The DC motor may draw to much or draw too low current thus the smps will not work.

    Hi Michael,

You need to make sure the output voltages from the power supply are good and stable. If the output voltages are good then suspect a bad motherboard.

    HI Abdul,

If the smps is producing all the right output voltages then suspect a bad mainboard. The best to confirm is to get another good working smps to compare.

    HI Raj,

That means the smps can't withstand the load current draw. Try check the e-caps in it for bulged or high ESR value.

    HI Ankur,

Did you connect the power supply to load/motherboard to test it? Does this power supply use optoisolator IC? If yes then check the LED are side for any high ohm resistor. For your information, a bad output round coil also could cause the output voltage to increase.

You need to open up the power supply and check for bad filter capacitor at the output side. Test is with ESR meter.
