Beware While Upgrading HP Laptops
Received HP Notebook 15 -db1080au for HDD Upgrade from SATA to SSD.
Customer was asking about possibility of upgrading the HDD in his laptop. As customer is staying Far from My place I advised him to send me Model Number or Serial Number photo so that I can find out what best I can do.
On received of the photo I enquired with my Part supplier, supplier provide me three possibility options. PCIe, M.2 NVMe & SATA as per technology is concern NVMe is the better option for upgrade. Before order the part I reconfirmed it by downloading Maintenance and Service Guide.
It is clearly mentioned HDD Types Supported options & procedure in the Guide.
So I confirmed it with the Client & Ordered NVMe Stick for upgrade.
Customer sent the laptop to me after two days because I asked him to back up the required data to some External device. After receive of laptop I started Upgrade procedure.
Opened the back Cover & started searching the place where I can Plug the Drive. I found the location Beside the Battery. So I opened the packing of NVMe drive ……But….
to my surprise there is a Provision available for the Drive but socket is missing.
How it is possible?… I took my magnifier glass to confirm some sign of if this socket has removal by someone else before. On inspection I found the solder of the PCB for socket seems factory state…. & no one worked on this side.
Now what because this opened package of the NVMe drive cannot be replaced or Exchanged. So it is my mistake & I have to bear, so again discussed this thing with the customer, I convinced him that there is no option to connect the NVMe drive in this laptop & he agreed up on Putting SATA SSD Drive instead. So I ordered the SATA SDD.
So Connected the SATA HDD in the laptop & after Installing the OS Laptop is delivered to the customer. Discussed the situation with my part supplier, he told he was also reconfirmed before sending the NVMe to me.
Anyway this NVMe is fast moving item so I can use it in some other laptop; but what if part was rarely used?
Here I ordered the NVMe drive in first place for saving time & give same day delivery to the customer. but don’t make the same mistake as me. order the part after the proper visual inspection of the unit.

You still can use that NVMe memory module in a ssd hdd sata adapter. Like in a M2 to Sata3 adapter. And they are very cheap on Aliexpress too!

Albert,
In this laptop there is no room for NVMe memory module installation using SSD HDD SATA adapter. & if have room then also it doesn't make any sense, it doesn't give its potential data transfer speed via SATA connect,
SATA Connects through AHCI & data transfer speed is approx 600MB/s,where as NVMe is having data transfer through PCIe & speed up to 3,500MB/s.
