Brandnew Defect VGA to HDMi Video Adapter
Recently a brandnew VGA to HDMi converter was ordered on Amazon. After it arrived a week or 2 later I immediately tested the video converter on 3 different monitors with HDMi ports and on several VGA devices because no video output was visible.
But whatever device was connected the converter was never working! Of course I left a big complaint on Amazon to the seller the same day. Who not only sold me a twice as expensive converter compared to prices on Aliexpress but also a completely dead device too!
After that the communication with the seller who sold me this completely defect device got worse when they replied that they only offered a 40% refund. Which I naturally refused since a complete replacement or a full refund was the right reply to expect. And I replied that I didn’t want to pay 60% for a completely useless product! Their second offer to refund 75% of my payment however was acceptable and they will issue the partial refund in 3 to 4 days.
Hereby therefore a big warning to all Amazon buyers who also see Amazon’s message to select for returning the defect product back to the seller in such cases. NEVER select this option as it no doubt will cost you another 32 euro for shipping ANYTHING back to China which is just insane! But instead select here the option that the received product was completely defect!
Of course being an educated electronic repair guy it now was time to examine why my brandnew device failed to work. And if the problem can be solved without adding up additional high costs. It took some time to extract the small converter board out of the metal case which only was possible by removing the black plastic closing plug on the HDMi output side of the housing. And afterwards pulling in the VGA cable into the other side to get the pcb out of the metal housing.
And first thing I did was checking the voltages and temperature of the components with my new RX-500 thermal camera. The 1.8V voltage regulator U4/AMS1117 got as hot as 60.4 degrees Celsius and the HDMi QF32 U2 chip ZY5621 about 54.7 degrees Celsius. And also the 5V USB input voltage lowered to about 4.41V DC! So this likely points to a defect ZY 5621 chip taking too much current!
Above photo on the right shows my defect VGA to HDMi board. Here follows the BOM component list:
R1,2,3 => 2k
R4,5,6 => 10k
R8,9,10 => 70 ohm
Y1 kristal J24576 (being 24.576MHZ)
U4 AMS1117 1.8V
U1 1117 3.3V
U2 VH1.1 ZY5621 E002 2021-04-25
Wiring VGA port AR (orange wire) AL (purple wire) Audio Right & Left
B (white wire) , G (green wire), R (red wire)
Vert sync (yellow), Hor sync (grey), GND (black)
Chips U4 and U2 get very hot ~60 degrees Celsius
and the 5V USB voltage lowered to about 4,41V DC!
Since no other active components were placed in this circuit this meant that the ZY5621 must be the culprit here that consumed too much power. Why also the 1.8V regulator got extra hot and also the 5V input voltage became too low!
Following a complete circuit of this VGA to HDMi converter with ZY5621 chip and more data on this ZY5621 chip.
You can click here to visit the link for clearer picture
Sadly I wasn’t able to find even a single ZY5621 HDMi converter chip to fix my defect converter. So replacing it was not possible and if it was sold it probably would cost more on shipping cost alone anyhow.
Hopefully this article presents some interesting info on this VGA to HDMi converter with ZY5621 converter chip!
Following a last snapshot of the heavily bruised back of the box that contained the completely defect VGA to HDMi converter. (notice the transparent tape that probably was previously added by another buyer that most likely already returned this defect product!)

Albert,
I think Chinese manufacturer make particular components for particular Model only hence you won't find any reference/ parts elsewhere.recently i found PWM IC in PC ATX SMPS marked 8117 it is DIP-7 package IC when searching on the net it shows ME8117 IC but when checked datasheet it is p-channel Mosfet. it is like for few cents IC i have to buy a New SMPS.

Strangest thing happened when I bought a complete new identical vga2hdmi adapter converter through Aliexpress thinking that would solve the problem. But completely unexpected it didn't because that vga2hdmi did not work any better either! My monitors still rreported the on screen message "NO SIGNAL FOUND" and switched off. But I didn't open that second new converter to compare them because they looked the same and didn't do the same. However I used my USB breakout board so I could measure the current that was going into the 5V USB port of the first converter that was already open. It was about 150 mA DC when connected to my external 30V 10A max power supply set to 5V. And I also checked for the presence of videosignals on the vga and hdmi wires that I could detect with my Tek 2465 scope. HF pulses showed but somehow those signals do not match that of the frequency standard of my monitors. So this product was a dead end why I decided to buy another vga2hdmi adapter on Aliexpress. This one: https://nl.aliexpress.com/item/1005002173117868.html?spm=a2g0o.order_list.order_list_main.32.782f79d29nzDFn&gatewayAdapt=glo2nld
That according to the reviews works very well! What not can be said of the bad reviews I noticed after my never working vga2hdmi adapters on that seller's webpage!

It could as well be this 800V Infineon 7pins PWM ICE3AR2280JZ controller Yogesh?
The datasheet gives many circuit examples that may help in analyzing the similarities.
And the chip 8117 is available for about $4 on Aliexpress.

Hi Albert
Thanks for another great analysis.
What do you think should be the max temperature a component should run at?
And would that max acceptable temperature vary for different types of components?

To answer that question we probably would have to look into the datasheet. Although the temeperature in most cases only is mentioned according to storage keeping safety rules that would apply for most products. I haven't searched any further because both my identical vga2hdmi adapters were not working out of the box. And the reviews on the seller's webpage of this video converter were extremely bad why I decided to buy another converter that got good reviews. I now have to wait and see if that one works? But in this case the 60 degs on the regulator was more than what you thought it should be as was the 54 degs on the IC.
So, could i use the same yardstick when checking regulators? ie if they are running at 60degs then treat it as a fault condition and look for something downstream overheating?

I guess that for instance in some Green WD SSD drives a chip on its pcb gets this hot without cooler attached. And some USB memory sticks - mostly the smaller ones - get real hot instantly too. I can't give you any exact details. I only started checking the temperature of the components in the video converter after I noticed that my brandnew vga2hdmi converter wasn't working.

And beside the high temperatures measured, it was a clear fact that here the normally 5V DC input on the USB powering port was also way too low!

Vow! What a detailed and educative article about a converter, which normally anyone would just discard and go for a new one! It shows passion and tiger type hunting habits! Excellent and professional analysis and report along with caution! Many thanks for sharing!

I already did dear Parasuraman. But completely unexpected also the new ordered identical vga2hdmi adapter wasn't working. So after reading some very bad reviews from other disappointed buyers about this useless crappy product I decided to buy a completely different vga2hdmi converter that got good reviews.
This one: https://nl.aliexpress.com/item/1005002173117868.html?spm=a2g0o.order_list.order_list_main.32.782f79d29nzDFn&gatewayAdapt=glo2nld
that I hope really does work this time!

I can not believe there sellers like that. I never had an issue with amzon but we never know till we face this sometimes in life. they should have refunded the whole amount. sorry you were not able to get it fixed due to not finding the right replacement for a faulty part. thanks for sharing it and thanks for all the information provided. have a blessed day

The second identical vga2hdmi adapter converter that this time was ordered through Aliexpress instead of Amazon was half the price I paid on Amazon and was afterwards fully refunded Walleed!
It may sounds unbelievable, but that converter was completely dead too!
Only showing the Monitor's screen message "no signal found" after all my perfectly working HDMi monitors simply switched off.

Albert, I checked PWM ICE3AR2280JZ Datasheet it is not what i am looking for.
IC Marked with 8117,i traced Circuit pins are probably like this
1 Soft Start
2 VCC
3 GND
4 FB
5 CS
6 NC
7 & 8 Are directly connected to SMPS Transformer primary second end.

Understood Yogesh, so it sadly was still a different pwm controller. Although your defect 8117 is easily replaced with a new on Aliexpress.
PS: update on the other vga tro hdmi converters that were ordered from here at the ciin store: https://nl.aliexpress.com/item/1005002173117868.html? spm=a2g0o.order_list.order_list_main.32.782f79d29nzDFn&gatewayAdapt=glo2nld
I ordered 2 of thEM and they arrived today on 1 march 2024. And both video converters IMMEDIATELY AND PERFECTLY WORKED!
