no sound in radio repair

A customer of mine sent to me a device for repair that can support MP3, Radio and USB. The complaint was no sound but have power. Sound issues usually is related to bad speaker, speaker wires came off, improper or missing DC supply voltage to sound IC (audio amplifier IC),  bad sound IC, dry joints, broken circuit track and etc.

The first thing I did was to open up the cover and check for any broken connection (yellow arrow in the 2nd photo below) between the speaker and the mainboard. I also checked on the speaker and all seems to be working fine.

When I had a closer look at all the components on the circuit board, I found that the sound SMD IC 8002A was actually bulged and slightly burnt-see the photo below:

I got new IC in my spare parts compartment and directly placed it on the board and do some rework.

It was an easy job with the use of a SMD rework station. You can actually click on this 8002A SMD IC link to access the IC info.

Once the replacement of new IC was done and powered On, the sound came back to life.

Conclusion- Obviously you don’t just direct replace the IC and straight away retest the device, you got to check on all the corresponding components first to made sure they are all good. If you do not  know how to check the components, you can get Jestine Yong’s ebook here. Ok, will see you again in the next repair article!

Thanks very much sir for this presentation, but how can I get to know that it's faulty when not burnt physically?
