Cutting Modification On LG LED TV

This 32″ led tv got to my workshop from a friend with complaint of no picture, but there is audio.  Usually I thought it could be backlight problem. So I switch ON the tv and gently tap on the panel and there was beam of  light flashing, which indicated backlight is ok.

Then I uncover the back cover, did visual inspection, no sign of any bad component.

Use multimeter to check the single motherboard voltages: 12v,5v 1.2v 3.3v and 1.8v….all were present. So I then suspected the t-con board, check for 12v at pisco fuse…ok there.

Usually there are other voltages on t-con that must be present before t-con can function: vcc, avdd, vgh, vgl, Vcom, however when I checked for these voltages, vgh was not present and avdd was 4.8v.

With this kind of result I suspected there is likely a “short” in the panel. For me I hardly do panel repairs for fear of not being sustainable, however this time,I thought of giving it a trial.

So called my friend and told him my conditions of accepting the repair,so he was ready to bear all risks involved if there is failure at any point. So i surf youtube if I can see a video of this kind of repair, since I don’t have a techie friend to consult like our honorable dear colleague LOL. Well I came across one on youtube.

At the bottom side of the flex connector on the t-con board there are signal lines, these signal are coming from SM4186(dv-dc  ic) and six of these lines I cut with new razor blade neatly, exercising caution not to cut any other signal line which may spoil the repair, ( ckv1,ckv2,ckvb1, ckvb2) before cutting you must have check relevance components to ensure they are all good: smd caps, inductors etc, see picture below, zoom to see it well,

then use analog meter to check and ensure no bridging or short between the lines, clean the area with brush. Then reassemble all parts together, power tv and switch ON…..Wow picture of Lg logo came up brightly, picture below.

As you can see there are no distortions on the quality of the picture: no vertically nor horizontal lines nor blur picture etc.

I notified friend about the job, he came around to see and was very happy. This’s the finished repair work.

Well done on the repair. I find it illogical that removing signals can effect a repair. It would be good to know the Youtube video you watched.

I found an interesting Youtube video that may explain why cutting these lines work - they are duplicated and by cutting shorted and or low resistance lines allow the good lines to take over?

      Anyway watch for yourselves:

WOW Imoudu, you are even becoming an expert in fixing modern LCD's! No idea how you managed to get the correct info so easily on what lines to select to cut though? I suppose you found that exact same tv model in that Youtube video you mentioned?

Greatly inspiring repair, Imoudu. You have many repair 'techie' friends yet you dont seem to realize. Lets call a spade a spade, Engineer Parasuraman is one such friend, forget the one on one aspect. Keeping in touch regularly for consultations and sharing information is what matters most. Some of the imagined 'techie' friends we see physically every other day sometimes are a big letdown at the hour of need. I've been a car mechanic and a phone repairer, so I know what I'm writing about. Imoudu, their are many more distant but reliabe 'techie' friends, just to name a few; Jestine, Albert, Yogesh, Suranga, Humphrey, Waleed, Paris, SK Wong, who have been 'techie' friends of great benefitiary to thousands of other 'techies' and leaners like me. Imoudu, you too are a 'techie' friend to thousands. So the arising question is, can you have 'techie' friends and 'techie' friends not be with you ? Imoudu, I look with curiousity and great admiration at the sketch of designer MA Mustafa, my added-on 'techie.' friend.
